Taiwanese tech company Synology Inc. announced that ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, the operating system for its dedicated backup appliances, will be rolled out in the third quarter of this year.

The tech company made the announcement during Synology’s COMPUTEX 2026 media event on Wednesday in Taiwan.

In a statement, it said that the release expands backup and recovery capabilities across major Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platforms and virtualization environments.

It also introduces artificial intelligence (AI)-powered threat detection to strengthen proactive cyber-resilience.

Cody Hall, product team manager at Synology, said the new release now supports five platforms under the ActiveProtect lineup: Microsoft Azure Virtual Machines, Amazon EC2, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, and Google Workspace.

Now users are empowered to move between these platforms to find the mixture that works best for them and remain protected while they are exploring those different options,” Mr. Hall said during the media event.

The release now allows virtual machine (VM) instances to be restored across cloud and on-premises environments, supporting flexible disaster recovery, Synology said.

It also adds support for backup copies to Azure Blob Storage and enables cloud-to-cloud restoration directly to production VM environments, reducing recovery time and costs.

ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 also introduces AI-driven threat detection for backup data.

Its anomaly detection engine uses machine learning to identify irregular patterns, such as unusual change rates, mass deletions, and entropy spikes, with affected files automatically quarantined.

Synology said the platform also integrates with third-party antivirus tools to scan backup data for malware, ensuring that only clean versions are restored.

An Auto Fallback feature automatically reverts to the latest safe backup if a restore point is found to be compromised.

COMPUTEX 2026, where Synology announced updates including ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, is one of the world’s largest annual computer trade shows. It runs from June 2 to June 5 this year. — Edg Adrian A. Eva
