PAS will prevail over Bersatu if they clash at polls, says party leader

PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader is confident that Perikatan Nasional supporters will choose the party if it ends up contesting against Bersatu in the coming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections.

PAS treasurer Iskandar Abdul Samad said his party is prepared for any possibility following its move to cut ties with Bersatu.

“We are confident that those who support PN will vote for PAS if we are up against Bersatu for a seat,” he told FMT.

He was responding to Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s insistence that the party was ready to challenge PAS at the polls “on all fronts” after the Islamic party severed ties with Bersatu last week.

At a press conference last night, Muhyiddin also said Bersatu would contest the Johor and Negeri Sembilan polls under the PN banner.

The Johor state election will be held on July 11, and the Negeri Sembilan polls on Aug 1.

Last week, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the party was severing ties with Bersatu as it had become overly focussed on power and no longer prioritised Malay-Muslim unity.

Stating that Bersatu’s position in PN would be discussed at a PAS meeting tonight, Hadi clarified that any decision to remove the party from PN would depend on a majority vote among component members.

PN comprises PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party.
