PETALING JAYA: Unheralded Malaysian men’s doubles pair Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong continued their fine run at the Macau Open by defeating compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong to book a semi-final berth.
The world No 73 pair saved four match points in the deciding game before beating the 25th-ranked top seeds 14-21, 21-11, 24-22 in a hard-fought quarter-final match that lasted 57 minutes at the Macao East Asian Games Dome.
Hang Yee-Eng Cheong were trailing 17-20 in the rubber game and again 21-22 but kept their cool to overcome their much more experienced seniors.
In the last four tomorrow, they will meet Indonesian pair Ali Faathir Rayhan-Devin Arthas Wahyudi.
This is the Malaysian pair’s first semi-final appearance in a World Tour Super 300 championship.
Women’s doubles pair Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting also booked their semi-final spot after defeating new South Korean pair Kim Hye Jeong-Moon In Seo 21-14, 21-16 in 38 minutes.
In the semi-finals tomorrow, the Malaysian world No 23 duo will either face China’s Cao Zi Han-Bao Li Jing or Taiwan’s Hsieh Yi En-Teng Chun Hsun.
Also through to the last four are mixed doubles pair Hoo Pang Ron-Lai Pei Jing, who beat South Korea’s Cho Song Hyun-Jeong Na Eun 21-11, 21-13 in just 24 minutes.
The Malaysians will face Indonesian pair Ali Faathir Rayhan-Devin Artha Wahyudi.
