PETALING JAYA: DAP today announced that it will field Nor Zulaila Ghani and Lee Wern Yiing as Pakatan Harapan’s candidates for the Tiram and Johor Jaya seats, respectively, in the Johor state elections on July 11.
Nor Zulaila has been serving as a local councillor with the Kajang municipal council since 2018 and has more than 12 years of experience in public service, community development and government administration.
The Muar native is currently working as a private secretary to deputy finance minister Liew Chin Tong.
She previously served the party as a special officer to the Bangi MP, a constituency coordinator for Semenyih, and an aide to the Serdang MP.
Nor Zulaila’s candidacy was announced by DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook in Plentong, Johor Bahru, today, Sinar Harian reported.
Tiram is one of the state constituencies within the PKR-held Tebrau parliamentary constituency.
Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Azizul Bachok won the seat with a majority of 5,281 votes at the 2022 state election, defeating six other candidates, including Pakatan Harapan’s S Gopalakrishnan of PKR.
Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching previously said the party planned to field outgoing Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim in the Tiram seat.
Teo dislosed the matter after Marina, a one-term assemblyman, said she would not be defending her Skudai seat and had decided to step away from politics.
Loke today also announced that Lee, the Johor DAP Youth chief, will be fielded to defend the Johor Jaya seat under the PH banner.
Lee is the special officer to incumbent assemblyman Liow Cai Tung, who has held the seat for three terms since 2013.
She retained it in the 2022 state election with a 1,922-vote majority in a four-cornered contest against candidates from BN, Perikatan Nasional and Warisan.
