Umno leader Jamal Yunos was previously ordered to pay more than RM300,000 in damages and costs to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok after he was found to have defamed her.
PETALING JAYA: Monday’s scheduled public auction of 14 items seized from Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Yunos’s home has been called off after he made a RM66,600 payment to settle an outstanding judgment debt owed to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
Kok’s lawyer, SN Nair, said Jamal tendered a banker’s cheque amounting to RM66,600 to Kok at about 5pm yesterday.
The payment was made in satisfaction of the judgment debt arising from a defamation suit.
“In view of the payment received, the public auction previously scheduled for June 22 has been called off and postponed pending clearance of the banker’s cheque,” said Nair.
He said the judgment debt will be deemed fully satisfied and the auction proceedings will be cancelled once the cheque is cleared.
Earlier, the High Court had allowed enforcement action to proceed after dismissing interpleader applications filed by Jamal’s son and brother-in-law, who had claimed ownership of the seized items.
The case stems from a 2022 High Court ruling ordering Jamal to pay more than RM300,000 in damages and costs to Kok after he was found to have defamed her.
Jamal had deposited RM300,000 into a stakeholder’s account pending an appeal, but an outstanding sum of RM66,061.65, comprising costs and interest, remained unpaid.
Kok subsequently filed the writ of seizure to recover the balance.
