RAKUTEN VIBER has rolled out ChatGPT-powered tools via the messaging app in partnership with OpenAI.
The partnership aims to make artificial intelligence tools more accessible for daily use, it said.
“We want to make everyday communication easier and more creative,” Rakuten Viber Chief Executive Officer Ofir Eyal said. “Partnering with OpenAI means we can bring ChatGPT to our users in the Philippines to add real, day-to-day value — even if they would never have sought it out on their own. Whether you’re drafting the perfect message, remixing an image, or just exploring a new idea, this is now built into the app people already use every day.”
“Messaging is where so much of everyday life happens. With ChatGPT in Viber, people can get helpful, creative support right in the moment, from finding the right words to catching up on busy chats or remixing a photo. We’re excited to partner with Rakuten Viber to bring these tools into an app people already use every day,” said Torben Severson, OpenAI vice-president and head of Global Business Development.
Several functions are now available to all Viber users in the Philippines on iOS and Android, with desktop support to be rolled out soon. Viber apps must be updated to the latest version.
A paid ChatGPT account is not required but existing users can connect their credentials to get higher limits for some features.
The functionalities rolled include having ChatGPT as a dedicated contact and tab, allowing users to ask or search anything without leaving the app.
Users can also tag ChatGPT in conversations for suggestions or questions.
“ChatGPT responses are visually distinct from other participants’ messages, so it’s always clear when a message comes from ChatGPT. Only the specific message you send is shared with ChatGPT, not any context from the rest of your conversation.”
Meanwhile, with Image Remix, which is powered by ChatGPT Images, users can edit and personalize photos directly in their chats.
Using Link Summary, ChatGPT can summarize the key points from a shared article, blog post, or document by tapping a button under a link. This feature is enabled by default in all group chats.
Chat Summary allows users to catch up on conversations via a roundup visible only to them.
Other tools include Polish Messages and Translate Message. — Bettina V. Roc
