KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Two men suspected of transporting heroin were arrested after a high-speed police chase ended in a multi-vehicle collision on Jalan Kuching, with officers recovering nearly 20g of suspected drugs from their car.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspects, aged 40 and 42, have been remanded to assist investigations, the New Straits Times reported this afternoon.

He said the incident began at about 5.30pm yesterday when a team from the Wangsa Maju Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division spotted a Perodua Viva believed to be carrying drugs in the Wangsa Maju area.

Fadil said police instructed the driver to stop, but the vehicle instead sped off, triggering a pursuit towards Jalan Kuching.

He said the driver allegedly weaved dangerously through traffic before losing control and crashing into three vehicles that had been caught in a traffic jam.

According to Fadil, the collision involved the suspects’ Perodua Viva, another Perodua Viva driven by a 60-year-old man, a Perodua Bezza driven by a 42-year-old man and a Honda City driven by a 20-year-old woman.

He said both suspects were apprehended at the scene before they could escape.

A search of the vehicle uncovered 19.63g of suspected heroin, Fadil said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for alleged drug trafficking, as well as Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Fadil said no one was injured in the crash and only damage to the four vehicles was reported.

He urged anyone with information on the incident to contact the Sentul police hotline, the Kuala Lumpur police hotline, the Jalan Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, or the nearest police station.

The chase came less than a day after another serious incident on Jalan Kuching, when a car caught fire following a crash at the Jalan Kuching exit ramp of the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE).

In that early morning incident, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters found a car engulfed in flames with three people inside after responding to an emergency call at 5.20am.

Two occupants died after becoming trapped in the burning vehicle, while a third person was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment, with the cause of the crash and fire still under investigation, Bernama reported.
