PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. on Wednesday pledged sustained funding for the Philippine Air Force (PAF) as the government accelerates efforts to boost the country’s territorial defense amid an increasingly challenging regional security environment.
The modernization program includes the planned acquisition of long-range patrol aircraft, more Black Hawk and Bell 412 EPX helicopters, advanced surveillance radar systems and flight simulators to improve maritime surveillance, territorial defense and operational readiness.
“Modern challenges grow increasingly complex, requiring sustained investments in your capabilities so that you can perform your duties more safely and more effectively,” Mr. Marcos said during the PAF’s 79th anniversary celebration at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.
PAF Commanding General Arthur M. Cordura said the service is focused on enhancing deterrence and area-denial capabilities while expanding its operational reach through the development of air bases in strategic locations, including Pag-asa Island in the South China Sea and Santa Ana, Cagayan province, near the country’s northern sea lanes.
“As modern warfare evolves and new dimensions of air power emerge, there is a need for greater adaptability, interoperability, integration and optimal use of capabilities,” Mr. Cordura said.
The modernization program supports the government’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, which shifts the military’s focus from internal security to protecting the country’s territory, exclusive economic zone and maritime interests.
Mr. Cordura said the planned acquisitions would strengthen the Philippine Air Force’s ability to monitor and respond across greater distances.
The PAF logged 49,896 flying hours over the past year for missions ranging from territorial patrols and disaster response to humanitarian assistance, reflecting its expanding operational role.
Mr. Marcos said these operations had strengthened cooperation with allies, improved interoperability and contributed to regional stability.
He also ordered the Philippine Air Force to ensure the airworthiness of its aircraft and maintain strict safety standards in both operations and training.
Beyond equipment acquisition, the administration is funding specialized intelligence training and advanced flight simulation programs to prepare personnel to operate more sophisticated platforms.
Mr. Cordura said the air force would continue accelerating modernization, boosting operational readiness and deepening cooperation with allies and partners as it works toward becoming a credible, agile and multi-domain force. — Erika Mae P. Sinaking
