'Testy' House GOP meeting ends with no progress amid MAGA fury at Supreme Court

House Republicans convened a meeting on Wednesday to try to break the impasse that has suspended all business on the floor — but it didn't go well, reported MS NOW's Mychael Schnell in a post to X.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) "convened a call with some House Republicans today to discuss a path forward on immigration legislation to unfreeze the floor," Schnell reported — but the call was "testy" and didn't go anywhere, according to her sources.

"Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, moderates, and conservatives were on the call," Schnell continued. "Johnson's message was: Can we find a path forward?" The discussion, she said, "ended without a definitive resolution — leaving GOP leadership no closer to re-opening the floor," and likely leaving things frozen at least until the House returns on July 13.

According to one source, much of the anger stems from the Supreme Court's ruling striking down President Donald Trump's order abolishing birthright citizenship.

"In the wake of the disastrous SCOTUS opinion on birthright citizenship, many of us feel it advisable to actually do what we said and codify Trump border security & expect the promise to be honored," the source said.

All of this comes after a disastrous day for Johnson, in which he put forward a plan by MAGA hardliner Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) to attach the SAVE America Act, Trump's signature package of restrictions on voting rights — only for over a dozen Republicans to vote against it and leave the House without a rules package to move forward.
