JOHOR BAHRU: Tucked away in Taman Perbadanan Islam here is a humble eatery that has been serving fragrant biryani dishes for over 40 years.
At Roslin Beriani House, diners are welcomed into a clean, comfortable space, with bright orange chairs adding a cheerful splash of colour. Photos of the menu line the walls, offering a tempting preview of what awaits.
As its name suggests, biryani is the star attraction, with customers able to enjoy the fragrant rice with chicken, fish, lamb shank, prawns and more.
“The biryani is made using our family’s recipes and we use basmati rice,” said Mohamed Khairul Nizam Mustaffa, whose granduncle founded the business in 1983.
Today, the eatery is owned by his mother, while Nizam helps oversee daily operations and its catering services.
Although the biryani remains the biggest draw, Nizam said other popular choices include laksa Johor as well as mee and mee hoon soto.
“My hope is that our customers are satisfied with the food we serve,” said the 35-year-old, who added that every dish on the menu is prepared using the family’s recipes.

The Nasi Beriani Ayam Merah features fluffy rice paired with juicy, flavourful chicken – the latter offering a pleasant balance between sweet and spicy, with just enough heat to provide a satisfying kick.
The meal comes with dalcha and acar timun, which add a refreshing contrast. For an even more satisfying meal, pair it with crispy papadom and pajeri nenas, a pineapple curry that is subtly sweet and pleasantly tangy.

In the mood for something heartier? Give the Nasi Beriani Kambing a try.
The mutton is tender and richly flavoured, with a gentle spicy kick that pairs beautifully with the soft, fragrant rice.
For the full experience, skip the cutlery and enjoy it with your hands. It may get a little messy, but it is well worth it!

The laksa Johor is another standout: soft noodles served in a thick, flavourful gravy and topped with cucumber, onions, sambal belacan and other accompaniments.
The combination of ingredients results in an enjoyable mix of textures, making for a hearty bowl that is especially comforting on a chilly day.
Other menu highlights include mee Bandung, roti canai, mee rebus and a selection of kuih-muih.
To round off your meal, the iced 3-layer tea is a decadent treat. Made with palm sugar and evaporated milk, it offers a pleasing balance of bold tea notes and creamy sweetness.
Overall, Roslin Beriani House offers a comforting experience with traditional flavours. There is plenty here to keep both first-time visitors and loyal regulars coming back.
