Police open eight probe papers in Johor polls, five involving arson‑related mischief

JOHOR BAHRU, July 3 — Police have opened eight investigation papers linked to the 16th Johor state election for the period from June 27 until yesterday.

State police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said five of the cases involve arson-related mischief and other acts causing property damage.

“Police will continue to intensify monitoring, enforcement and action throughout the campaign period to ensure all offences are dealt with firmly, fairly and with integrity,” he said in a statement.

The cases are being investigated under Sections 435, 426 and 427 of the Penal Code.

Ab Rahaman said the security situation throughout the election period has remained peaceful and under control, with 2,037 permit applications received and 1,849 approved so far.

Ab Rahaman added that 1,155 political activities were held and monitored by police during the same period to ensure they were conducted in an orderly manner, complied with legal requirements, and did not affect public safety and order.

He said police remain on high alert to ensure smooth traffic flow, security and public order, with personnel deployed continuously across all election areas.

He also urged political parties, candidates, supporters and members of the public to respect the law, comply with permit conditions, and exercise maturity in politics.

Ab Rahaman advised all parties against provocation or actions that could threaten public harmony, and cautioned against the spread of false or unverified information, particularly on social media.

The Johor polls campaign period began after nomination day on June 27, while polling is set for July 11. — Bernama
