GUANGZHOU, July 6 — As China’s job market continues to tighten and lay-offs ripple through private-sector industries, unemployed workers are increasingly seeking refuge in an unlikely place: local Communist Party community service centres.

These centres — typically frequented by retirees or left largely unused — have become informal sanctuaries for jobseekers looking for a quiet, stable environment to regroup, according to details from the South China Morning Post .

One of them is Joey Zhang, a former brand planner in her 30s who lost her job after her advertising firm cut staff amid rising use of artificial intelligence in marketing work. She now spends her mornings at a Guangzhou Party centre with her laptop, describing long, anxious days searching for work in a slowing economy. Cafes proved too costly and too crowded, prompting her to seek out the centre instead.

China’s broader employment landscape remains strained. Youth unemployment for those aged 16 to 24 — excluding students — stood at 15.6 per cent in May, slightly lower than April but still above last year’s levels. The SCMP reported that geopolitical tensions, including disruptions linked to the conflict in Iran, have dampened business confidence and weighed on hiring.

For many jobseekers, Party centres offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and a sense of routine — a stark contrast to the uncertainty outside. While not designed as employment hubs, they have become de facto shelters for those navigating prolonged job searches.

Local authorities have not formally commented on the trend, but the centres’ growing role reflects the pressures facing China’s workforce as companies restructure and economic headwinds persist.
