THE Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) said it will assist refrigerant technicians in the process of reducing the use of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in refrigerators and air conditioners by 2030.
The EMB made the announcement during a workshop in Quezon City to detail stage three of its Hydrochlorofluorocarbon Phase-out Management Plan.
HCFCs are deemed potent greenhouse gases and deplete the ozone layer. They are currently being phased out under the terms of the Montreal Protocol, which came into force in 1989.
The EMB said the government will support the refrigeration and air-conditioning service industries, as well as makers of solvent and firefighting materials, during the Philippine transition to alternative refrigerants.
EMB Director Michael Drake P. Matias told reporters that the aid will involve training refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians in the collection of HCFCs. — Marron Joshua F. Mendoza
