THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has requested shopping mall operators to open their parking areas to the public for overnight parking as Super Typhoon Inday, with international name “Bavi,” approaches Luzon.

In a memorandum on Thursday, MMDA Chairman Romando S. Artes asked all concerned shopping mall operators to make available parking spaces in their facilities across Luzon as temporary safe parking areas for vehicles, amid strong winds and heavy rainfall forecast.

The MMDA said the measure will take effect on the evening of July 9 and will remain in place until the passage of the typhoon.

“Your cooperation in this joint public service effort will greatly help protect lives and properties amid this severe weather event,” Mr. Artes said in the memorandum.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Inday may exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday. The state weather bureau added that the typhoon’s effects are expected to be most felt from Thursday evening to Friday morning.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has also placed its operations center and member agencies on heightened alert in preparation for the effects of the typhoon and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

The MMDA also said its Public Information Office will repost and share the official announcements of participating malls to help inform residents seeking safe parking spaces.

Following this memorandum, several shopping malls have announced they will open their parking areas to the public, according to the MMDA’s official Facebook page.

Select Ayala, Robinsons, and Vista malls in affected areas said they would open their facilities to the public. Ayala Malls will keep waiting areas, restrooms, and charging stations open beyond mall hours, while Robinsons and Vista malls will provide free overnight parking, with access to restrooms, charging stations or power outlets, and free Wi-Fi. — Mark Joseph M.
