After suffering a third quarter knee injury last week versus the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix went under the microscope to discover the latest ailment in a tale of debilitating career injuries.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that the second-year signal caller had suffered a partial ACL tear in his left knee. The injury also featured a reaggravation to a bone bruise he suffered in a Week 7 matchup versus the San Francisco 49ers.

Penix followed up the news with a second opinion that confirmed the worst; He had indeed suffered ACL damage that would need reattachment surgery. The approximate recovery time could take up to at least nine months.

The news was yet another blemish to an injury-riddled career for the 2024 first-round quarterback dating back to his college career. Below are the list of injuries he’s succumbed to since 2018.

2018: (Indiana) Penix suffered an ACL tear in his right knee during his fourth collegiate game. The injury occurred in a matchup against Penn State while he was splitting time with teammate Peyton Ramsey in his pursuit for the starting quarterback job.

2019: (Indiana) While leading the Hoosiers to a 7-2 start, Penix dislocated the SC joint his non-throwing right shoulder that ended his season. At the time, he had won the starting job as a redshirt freshman and seemed primed to lead the University of Indiana to its first 10-win season in school history.

2020: (Indiana) During the Covid-10 shortened regular season, Penix re-tore his ACL with just two games left in the campaign. Prior to the injury, he had thrown 14 touchdowns through five games, was a Heisman candidate and had beaten the Michigan Wolverines.

2021: (Indiana) Amidst mental health struggles due to having a myriad of injuries in a short amount of time, Penix struggled in his final season with the program throwing more interceptions (7) than touchdowns (4) before a season-ending shoulder injury ended his year in just five games. This time around, Penix had suffered a dislocated joint in his left throwing shoulder.

Since 2021, Penix hadn’t suffered any season-ending injury while playing on the gridiron. He transferred to the University of Washington in 2022 and started two years there combining for 67 touchdown tosses and 9544 passing yards in 28 starts.

His final year with the Huskies, Penix led the program to a school record 14 wins, its first-ever College Football Playoff Berth and its first National title game appearance since 1991.

In the NFL, Penix gained the starting job during the final month of the 2024 season. From then on, he started nine consecutive games before the bone bruise injury sidelined him in Week 8. Upon returning, the 25-year-old played the final two games of his 2025 season before another ACL tear placed him on the sidelines for good.

Penix was having an uneven second season with the franchise, but he did post nine touchdown passes to just three interceptions alongside a 60% completion percentage. However, due to his injury track record and alleged recovery time, his future as the Falcons starter in 2026 is now in extreme limbo.

Where Do The Falcons Go From Here:

Prio to drafting Penix, the Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a multiyear dear in the 2024 offseason. The expectation was for him to be its franchise quarterback for at least a few seasons as they contended for a playoff spot.

Cousins would go and start 14 games in 2024, before his own injuries succumbed him to the sidelines and out of the starting job altogether. While he completed nearly 67% of his passes for 3508 yards and 18 touchdowns, he led the league in interceptions (16) and threw nine of them and just one touchdown in his final five starts.

In 2025, Cousins primarily served as the team’s backup and will be expected to navigate Atlanta’s offense for the remainder of the season. He’s currently played in three games so far and started in Week 8 versus the Miami Dolphins when Penix was out.

In his lone start, Cousins threw for just 173 yards and zero touchdowns as Atlanta lost by double-digits against one of the worst teams in football. In relief of Penix last week, Cousins completed only 42% of his 14 pass attempts for under 50 yards and zero touchdown tosses.

For the immediate future, Atlanta’s passing offense will be in the hands of Cousins who looks like a washed form of himself since a history of injuries have caught up to him in his aging state. With the franchise not having a first-round pick in the upcoming draft, Atlanta’s quarterback future will likely be on hold this offseason.
