As 2025 comes to a close, it’s the perfect time to make sure your business technology is ready for the year ahead. While the holidays are often a time to relax, it’s also an ideal moment to prepare your IT systems so they’re secure, efficient, and ready to support your business goals in 2026.

Here’s a simple checklist to help you finish the year strong and start the new one with confidence.

1. Update Software and Operating Systems

Outdated software is one of the biggest security risks for any business. Keeping your systems updated closes vulnerabilities that hackers often exploit.
Take time to update all your devices, including servers, computers, and mobile phones. Make sure your antivirus, firewall, and endpoint protection tools are all current.
Important reminder for Windows users: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 in October 2025. If you’re still using it, plan your upgrade to Windows 11 or another secure operating system early in 2026 to stay protected.

2. Review Your Backup and Recovery Plan

Data loss can happen at any time due to cyberattacks, human error, or system failures. Regular backups are your best defense.
Confirm that backups are running automatically and that you can restore data quickly if needed. It’s smart to have both local and cloud backups for extra security.

3. Conduct a Security Audit

The end of the year is a great time to check how well your business is protected against cyber threats.
Review passwords, user permissions, and access to sensitive data. If you haven’t implemented multi-factor authentication yet, make it a priority for 2026. Even small updates can make a big difference in keeping your systems safe.

4. Evaluate Your Network Infrastructure

Your network keeps your business connected, but outdated equipment or poor configurations can slow things down and create vulnerabilities.
Inspect your routers, switches, and firewalls to make sure everything is working properly. Replace or upgrade older equipment and check your network performance to prepare for next year’s growth.

5. Review Compliance and Data Protection Policies

Many industries have strict regulations around data privacy and security. Staying compliant helps you avoid penalties and builds customer trust.
Take time to review your policies and ensure your business meets standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, or PCI-DSS. Update documentation and verify that employee access levels align with your current structure.

6. Test Your Disaster Recovery Plan

Unexpected downtime can happen to any business, so a strong recovery plan is essential.
Run a test of your recovery procedures before the year ends. Make sure your team knows what to do, contact information is current, and processes reflect any new systems added this year.

7. Plan and Budget for 2026 IT Investments

Planning ahead helps you avoid last-minute expenses and ensures your IT budget supports growth.
Review this year’s spending and identify areas that need investment next year, such as hardware upgrades, new software, or enhanced cybersecurity. Allocating funds now can help prevent surprises later.

8. Refresh Employee Cybersecurity Training

Your employees are your first line of defense against cyber threats. Ongoing training can prevent costly mistakes.
Schedule cybersecurity refresher sessions for early 2026. Cover key topics like phishing awareness, password management, and data safety. Encourage everyone to stay alert and proactive about security.

9. Clean Up Your Digital Workspace

A clean and organized digital environment helps systems run faster and more efficiently.
Archive old emails and files, uninstall unused applications, and remove outdated data from servers and cloud storage. This not only improves performance but also reduces clutter that can hide security risks.

10. Set IT Goals for 2026

Use this time to look ahead. Identify the technology projects that will help your business grow or operate more efficiently next year.
Consider whether it’s time to upgrade your phone system, move more services to the cloud, or implement automation tools. Setting clear IT goals now will give your business a strong start in 2026.
