Sydney Sweeney went the distance to become Christy Martin by gaining 35 pounds and training with a dialect coach to master the real-life boxer’s West Virginian accent, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On top of that, THR noted, the actor wore brown contact lenses and brunette wigs to further alter her looks for the film.

“When I looked in the mirror for the first time, I was like, ‘Whoa.’ I didn’t even recognize myself,” Sweeney told THR. “As an actor, I dream of being able to have roles like that where I get to lose myself completely, and I was able to do that with Christy.”

Christy to date has earned a 67% “fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 186 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “While Christy falters in tonal cohesion and emotional impact, it remains a compelling showcase for Sydney Sweeney’s transformative performance, grounding a mythic genre in raw, personal storytelling.
