Key Facts
Issues with X appeared to spike shortly after 10 a.m. EST, and just under 75,000 users reported issues with the platform by 10:11 a.m., according to DownDetector.
The number of outages reported declined to just over 5,800 by 11:20 a.m.
A majority of the problems (56%) were reported with X’s app, while 33% reported issues accessing the platform’s website, and another 10% reported server connectivity issues.
X did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment, though its developer platform status page indicated “some systems are degraded.”
Key Background
X has experienced several outages over the last year, including an apparent outage earlier this week after more than 28,000 users reported similar issues. Last year, Musk called for “major operational improvements” to the platform, citing a recent outage after two outages were reported in May. Earlier in the year, Musk claimed X was targeted by a “massive cyberattack” by “either a large, coordinated group and/or a country,” though some cybersecurity experts disputed the claim to Forbes.
Tangent
More than 170,000 people reported outages with Verizon coverage on Wednesday, though the cause of the disruption and the total number of impacted users are unknown. Verizon told Reuters there was “no indication of a cyberattack,” after some law agencies pursued the possibility. Verizon apologized for the outage Thursday, telling customers it “did not meet the standard of excellence” and said it would give a $20 account credit.
