TLDR

  • OpenAI has cut its infrastructure spend target from $1.4 trillion to $600 billion by 2030
  • The company is projecting $280 billion in revenue by 2030, up from $13.1 billion in 2025
  • A funding round of over $100 billion is being finalized, with Nvidia potentially investing $30 billion
  • ChatGPT now has over 900 million weekly active users, back at record highs
  • OpenAI’s valuation could exceed $850 billion including the new funding round

OpenAI has told investors it now plans to spend around $600 billion on computing infrastructure by 2030. That’s a big drop from the $1.4 trillion figure CEO Sam Altman had previously promoted.

The company says the lower number is meant to more closely match its expected revenue growth. It gives investors a clearer picture of how spending ties to income.

OpenAI is projecting revenue of over $280 billion by 2030. That’s up from $13.1 billion the company earned in 2025, which itself beat its $10 billion target.

Revenue is expected to come in roughly equal parts from consumers and businesses. OpenAI has also started testing advertising for some users, adding another potential income stream.

The company burned through $8 billion in 2025, which came in under its $9 billion target. That’s a small but positive sign for a company that has faced questions about whether it can ever cover its costs.

A Massive Funding Round Is Taking Shape

OpenAI is close to closing a funding round that could bring in more than $100 billion. About 90% of that is expected to come from strategic investors.

Nvidia is in talks to invest up to $30 billion as part of the round. SoftBank and Amazon are also among the strategic investors involved.

The pre-money valuation for the round is around $730 billion. When the full funding is included, the company’s overall valuation could top $850 billion.

OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit research lab. It became a household name after launching ChatGPT in 2022.

ChatGPT Growth and Product Updates

ChatGPT now has more than 900 million weekly active users. That’s up from 800 million as of October 2025.

The chatbot hit a slowdown in growth last fall, which led OpenAI to declare a “code red” in December. It has since returned to record highs in both weekly and daily active users.

OpenAI’s coding tool, Codex, has passed 1.5 million weekly active users. It competes directly with Anthropic’s Claude Code.

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar said the company’s annualized revenue topped $20 billion in 2025. That’s up from roughly $6 billion the year before.

The company spent the second half of 2025 announcing a series of multibillion-dollar infrastructure deals with chipmakers and cloud providers. Those deals form part of the foundation for its updated 2030 spending plan.

FORT STOCKTON, TEXAS – MARCH 24: The sun sets behind a pumpjack during a gusty night on March 24, 2024 in Fort Stockton, Texas. Employment in Texas has reached record highs, with the oil- and gas-producing Permian Basin, which covers a large swathe of west Texas, leading the way. Permian Basin towns of Midland and Odessa notched 2.6 and 3.5 percent unemployment respectively, according to the report touted earlier this month by Gov. Gregg Abbott. (Photo by Brandon Bell/Getty Images) Getty Images For the past two years, the United States has set oil production records. This growth is a continuance of the surge in oil production resulting from the shale boom that began earlier this century. According to data from the Energy Information Administration, U.S. oil production average 13.2 million barrels per day in 2024, up from 12.7 million in 2023 and 12.5 million in 2022. U.S. Oil Production 1860-2024. Energy Information Administration It is now clear that the U.S. is on track this year to set its third consecutive annual record for crude oil production. Year-to-date production through the week ending September 12, 2025 shows a production level of 13.44 million BPD, which is about 1.9% ahead of last year’s record pace. But beneath those headline numbers, a subtle shift is underway: growth is slowing. The slowdown becomes clear if we look at the year-over-year percentage changes over the past 20 years. Robert Rapier There have been only two other periods in the past 20 years where U.S. oil production growth slowed for three consecutive years, but both of those instances had extenuating circumstances. The first was from 2014 through 2016, when a price war launched by OPEC triggered a collapse in oil prices and forced U.S. producers to slash drilling activity. The…
