Avangrid subsidiaries Central Maine Power (CMP), New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), and United Illuminating (UI) mobilized crews and restored power to thousands

ORANGE, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, today announced the successful storm response by subsidiaries Central Maine Power (CMP), New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), and United Illuminating (UI) during this week’s blizzard. The snow storm and gusting wind caused outages across the companies’ service areas in Maine, upstate New York, and Connecticut, which were swiftly resolved due to strong preparation and restoration efforts.

“This week’s blizzard was a clear reminder of why both preparation and strong infrastructure are essential,” said Jose Antonio Miranda, CEO of Avangrid. “Our teams across CMP, NYSEG, and UI mobilized quickly, executed their storm plans, and restored power to thousands of customers, despite challenging conditions. These results reflect not only the dedication of our crews, but also the investments we continue to make in grid resilience. We remain committed to delivering reliable service and responding swiftly whenever severe weather impacts the communities we serve.”

CMP staged extra crews at its service centers across regions of Maine ahead of the storm. The company responded to more than 4,900 outages caused by the blizzard. In southern CT, UI’s service territory was hit with heavy snow and wind. Additional staffing was secured and the crews restored power to over 6,000 customers on Monday. NYSEG pre-staged 40 additional line crews in its Brewster division to stand ready to assist with restoration efforts in the area.

“I lost power Monday morning, during the height of the blizzard, with strong winds and blowing snow,” said Tom, a Milford, CT resident. “Within 20 minutes, a UI bucket truck appears. There was a tree limb down on a line and power was restored, all within 45 minutes. You lead a fabulous crew of dedicated people.”

The companies’ preparation and restoration efforts positioned them to respond quickly to all outages for continued reliable service. By pre‑staging crews, coordinating closely with local emergency partners, and leveraging ongoing investments in system resilience, Avangrid’s utilities were able to restore power safely, and in a timely manner, across all affected regions. The company will continue strengthening its infrastructure and storm response capabilities to ensure customers remain supported during future severe weather events.

The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For

The post The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Visions of future technology are often prescient about the broad strokes while flubbing the details. The tablets in “2001: A Space Odyssey” do indeed look like iPads, but you never see the astronauts paying for subscriptions or wasting hours on Candy Crush.  Channel factories are one vision that arose early in the history of the Lightning Network to address some challenges that Lightning has faced from the beginning. Despite having grown to become Bitcoin’s most successful layer-2 scaling solution, with instant and low-fee payments, Lightning’s scale is limited by its reliance on payment channels. Although Lightning shifts most transactions off-chain, each payment channel still requires an on-chain transaction to open and (usually) another to close. As adoption grows, pressure on the blockchain grows with it. The need for a more scalable approach to managing channels is clear. Channel factories were supposed to meet this need, but where are they? In 2025, subnetworks are emerging that revive the impetus of channel factories with some new details that vastly increase their potential. They are natively interoperable with Lightning and achieve greater scale by allowing a group of participants to open a shared multisig UTXO and create multiple bilateral channels, which reduces the number of on-chain transactions and improves capital efficiency. Achieving greater scale by reducing complexity, Ark and Spark perform the same function as traditional channel factories with new designs and additional capabilities based on shared UTXOs.  Channel Factories 101 Channel factories have been around since the inception of Lightning. A factory is a multiparty contract where multiple users (not just two, as in a Dryja-Poon channel) cooperatively lock funds in a single multisig UTXO. They can open, close and update channels off-chain without updating the blockchain for each operation. Only when participants leave or the factory dissolves is an on-chain transaction…
