PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers are surpassing 1.6 million operations, highlighting Angola’s accelerating shift toward digital payments and broader financial inclusion.
Digital payments expand rapidly in Angola

Angola’s digital finance ecosystem is gaining momentum as PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers exceed 1.6 million operations, signalling strong adoption of instant payment services across the country. The platform operates within the national instant payment system KWiK, a solution developed to modernise the financial system and expand access to banking services.

The growth reflects broader changes within Angola’s financial landscape, where digital wallets and mobile-based services are becoming increasingly important tools for everyday transactions. The system enables users to send money instantly using mobile numbers, email addresses, aliases, or IBAN identifiers, reducing reliance on traditional banking channels.

The KWiK infrastructure was developed under the oversight of the Banco Nacional de Angola as part of the country’s strategy to strengthen financial inclusion and improve payment interoperability across institutions. The system allows banks and non-bank financial providers to integrate instant payment services within a shared infrastructure.

Fintech innovation driving financial inclusion

PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers demonstrate the growing role of fintech companies in Angola’s financial ecosystem. Operated by the local payment services company Conectando, the PayPay application has attracted more than 800,000 users and thousands of registered merchants nationwide.

These merchants range from pharmacies and restaurants to small retail businesses, many of which now accept digital payments directly through mobile platforms. As a result, PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers are increasingly used for both peer-to-peer transfers and commercial payments.

The expansion of such services is helping integrate previously underserved populations into the formal financial system. Angola’s banking penetration remains relatively low compared with other emerging markets, which makes mobile payment solutions particularly relevant for broadening financial access.

KWiK ecosystem supporting payment transformation

The continued rise in PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers also reflects the rapid growth of the wider KWiK payment ecosystem. According to data released by the Government of Angola, the instant payment system processed approximately 35 million transfers in 2025 alone, representing transactions worth about 590 billion kwanzas.

Monthly volumes have also expanded significantly. In December 2025, the platform recorded roughly 3.5 million transfers with a value of 74.5 billion kwanzas, underscoring the scale of digital payment adoption across the economy.

Analysts note that PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers illustrate how fintech innovation is reshaping payment behaviour in Angola. Instant transfers lower transaction costs, accelerate settlement times, and improve liquidity circulation within the economy.

Looking ahead, policymakers expect continued expansion of the digital payments ecosystem. New functionalities under development include QR code payments, government service payments, merchant management tools, and integration with the Multicaixa network.

As these innovations take hold, PayPay’s monthly KWiK transfers are likely to remain an important indicator of Angola’s digital finance transformation and the country’s broader push toward a more inclusive and technology-driven financial system.
