Key Highlights:

  • The UK committee calls for an immediate ban on digital asset donations to political parties in its new crypto regulation proposal.
  • Experts warn the ban could create cybersecurity risks by centralizing sensitive data.
  • Proposed changes also include stricter corporate donation limits and a new enforcement unit.

The United Kingdom is taking a cautious approach to crypto regulation. In the latest development, the UK lawmakers have proposed banning crypto donations to political parties. Citing transparency and foreign influence risks, the parliamentary committee is pushing to take a stricter stance.

However, crypto industry experts have raised concerns regarding this crypto regulation proposal. They believe that such a ban could create new security challenges.

UK to Ban Political Donations in New Crypto Regulation

According to the latest reports, the UK is planning to restrict crypto donations to political parties. A UK parliamentary committee has submitted a proposal to impose an immediate ban on political crypto donations.

The committee warns that crypto donations pose a serious risk to the integrity of the political system. The lawmakers describe these donations as an “unnecessary and unacceptably high risk.” If approved, the government will amend the Representation of the People Bill, blocking crypto donations until stronger security measures are introduced.

This move is significantly a part of the country’s wider move to tighten crypto regulations. The parliament is also expected to impose strict political finance rules ahead of the next general election. This comes amid concerns about illicit funding and foreign interference.

Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy Chair Matt Western MP stated – “Few things are more important than maintaining trust in our politics. The pervasive idea that politicians can be ‘bought’ through foreign money is increasingly corrosive.”

The Committee has also urged the government to establish a central Political Finance Enforcement Unit. This Unit would take the lead on investigating political donations and be fully accountable for ensuring the rules are followed.

The Committee also criticized gaps in the current Bill on corporate donations. Currently, companies can donate the maximum allowed amount to multiple MPs or candidates, multiplying their influence many times over. The Committee recommends changing the law so that donation limits apply to the total a company can give, not per individual recipient.

Could This Crypto Ban Backfire and Raise Security Risks?

While the lawmakers advocate for stricter crypto regulations, especially regarding digital asset donations to political parties, others object. Crypto industry experts are not convinced by the lawmakers’ proposal.

They caution that the crypto ban could create bigger problems than solving some. For example, Kadan Stadelmann, founder of Komodo Blockchain and a cybersecurity specialist, stated that stricter crypto donation regulations or a major ban could force parties to store personal data in centralized databases. This may turn into a “massive honeypot” for hackers.

“This proposed ‘fix’ would be the envy of ransomware hacking groups and other nefarious online actors,” added Stadelmann. He noted that only fully decentralized systems, secured by strong cryptography, could meet parliament’s goal without creating new vulnerabilities.

The security specialist also cited previous political hacks to further reiterate his points. The examples he cited include the 2016 breaches of Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee, and the 2024 attack on President Donald Trump’s campaign servers.

Not all experts are against crypto in politics. Ian Taylor, Board Adviser at CryptoUK, said that with proper crypto regulations, donations to political parties can be transparent.

But Tom Keatinge, Director of RUSI’s Centre for Finance and Security, warned that a strict crypto ban could push donations offshore, leaving underlying risks unaddressed.

SEC Backs Nasdaq, CBOE, NYSE Push to Simplify Crypto ETF Rules

The US SEC on Wednesday approved new listing rules for major exchanges, paving the way for a surge of crypto spot exchange-traded funds. On Wednesday, the regulator voted to let Nasdaq, Cboe BZX and NYSE Arca adopt generic listing standards for commodity-based trust shares. The decision clears the final hurdle for asset managers seeking to launch spot ETFs tied to cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin and Ether. In July, the SEC outlined how exchanges could bring new products to market under the framework. Asset managers and exchanges must now meet specific criteria, but will no longer need to undergo drawn-out case-by-case reviews. Solana And XRP Funds Seen to Be First In Line Under the new system, the time from filing to launch can shrink to as little as 75 days, compared with up to 240 days or more under the old rules. “This is the crypto ETP framework we’ve been waiting for,” Bloomberg research analyst James Seyffart said on X, predicting a wave of new products in the coming months. The first filings likely to benefit are those tracking Solana and XRP, both of which have sat in limbo for more than a year. SEC Chair Paul Atkins said the approval reflects a commitment to reduce barriers and foster innovation while maintaining investor protections. The move comes under the administration of President Donald Trump, which has signaled strong support for digital assets after years of hesitation during the Biden era. New Standards Replace Lengthy Reviews And Repeated Denials Until now, the commission reviewed each application separately, requiring one filing from the exchange and another from the asset manager. This dual process often dragged on for months and led to repeated denials. Even Bitcoin spot ETFs, finally approved in Jan. 2024, arrived only after years of resistance and a legal battle with Grayscale. According to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, the streamlined rules could apply to any cryptocurrency with at least six months of futures trading on the Coinbase Derivatives Exchange. That means more than a dozen tokens may now qualify for listing, potentially unleashing a new wave of altcoin ETFs. SEC Clears Grayscale Large Cap Fund Tracking CoinDesk 5 Index The SEC also approved the Grayscale Digital Large Cap Fund, which tracks the CoinDesk 5 Index, including Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Cardano. Alongside this, it cleared the launch of options linked to the Cboe Bitcoin US ETF Index and its mini contract, broadening the set of crypto-linked derivatives on regulated US markets. Analysts say the shift shows how far US policy has moved. Where once regulators resisted digital assets, the latest changes show a growing willingness to bring them into the mainstream financial system under established safeguards
