BTC serves several core functions within the Bitcoin network, which drive its utility and incentivize participation.

• Peer-to-Peer Payments and Value Storage: BTC functions as a peer-to-peer medium of exchange, allowing users to send and receive funds without intermediaries, and serves as a decentralized store of value.
• Settling Network Transaction Fees: Users pay transaction fees in BTC to have their transactions included in a block. These fees are collected by the miners, providing an additional incentive for securing the network.
• Rewarding Proof-of-Work (PoW) Miners: The combination of newly minted BTC (block rewards) and transaction fees serves as the primary incentive mechanism for miners to secure the network and validate transactions.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

The Bitcoin protocol itself does not feature complex vesting schedules or staking mechanisms for its native token like many newer protocols. However, time-bound mechanisms are utilized in certain applications built on or interacting with the Bitcoin network.

• Native Time-Lock: Bitcoin can be locked natively on the Bitcoin network through a time-bound mechanism when participating in certain decentralized applications, such as non-custodial BTC staking. In such cases, the Bitcoin remains locked until the specified period ends.
• Hashed Time Lock Contracts (HTLC): Bitcoin can be used in interoperability solutions, such as HTLCs, which involve a locking mechanism to facilitate cross-chain asset transfers.
• Synthetic Assets: In protocols that create synthetic Bitcoin assets (e.g., $XBTC), transactions may involve a lock period with a specific unlock time to ensure confirmation security before final execution.
