โทเคโนมิกส์ OP (OP)

Optimism (OP) is the native governance and incentive token for the Optimism Collective, a bicameral system designed to reward public goods and build a sustainable future for the Ethereum ecosystem. The token economics are structured around a "flywheel" model where demand for blockspace generates revenue, which is then redistributed to fund public goods, further increasing the value of the network.

Issuance Mechanism

The OP token is an ERC-20 equivalent token that began circulating on May 31, 2022.

• Initial Total Supply: At genesis, the total supply was set at 4,294,967,296 OP.
• Inflationary Model: The token supply is designed to inflate over time. The specific inflation rate is subject to the latest rate approved by governance through the Token House.
• Revenue-Driven Buybacks (Proposed): In early 2026, a proposal was introduced to use 50% of incoming Superchain sequencer revenue for monthly OP token buybacks. This experiment aims to create a durable alignment between network usage and token value, shifting the token's role toward one tied to aggregate network activity.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial token supply is distributed across several key categories to balance the interests of users, contributors, and investors while prioritizing ecosystem growth.

The Ecosystem Fund (25%) is further subdivided into:

• Governance Fund (5.4%): Distributed to projects on Optimism via community voting.
• Partner Fund (5.4%): Strategically distributed by the Optimism Foundation.
• Seed Fund (5.4%): Focused on supporting early-stage projects (0 to 1).
• Unallocated Reserves (8.8%): Reserved for future programs determined by the Collective.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The OP token serves two primary functions within the network:

1. Governance

Optimism uses a bicameral governance system:

• Token House: Composed of OP tokenholders and their delegates. They vote on protocol upgrades, inflation adjustments, treasury appropriations, and the Governance Fund budget.
• Citizens’ House: Governs the allocation of RetroPGF. Citizenship is conferred via non-transferable "soulbound" NFTs.

2. Incentives and the "Flywheel"

The ecosystem is designed to create a self-reinforcing loop:

• Demand for Blockspace: Users and applications drive activity on the network.
• Sequencer Revenue: The sequencer collects transaction fees from this activity.
• RetroPGF: Revenue is distributed to contributors who have added value to the ecosystem.
• Ecosystem Growth: These rewards attract more builders and users, which in turn increases the demand for blockspace, completing the cycle.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Optimism employs a structured vesting and locking schedule to ensure long-term alignment and prevent market supply shocks.

• Core Contributors and Investors: Tokens allocated to these groups are subject to a lockup period. Specifically, these allocations were locked for one year after the initial circulation date (May 31, 2022), followed by linear vesting over a subsequent period.
• User Airdrops: A portion of the airdrop allocation (5% for Airdrop #1) was unlocked early (between Year 0 and Year 1), while the remaining 14% is held in reserve for future distributions.
• Ecosystem Fund and RetroPGF: These tokens are unlocked progressively over a 4-year period. By the end of Year 4, the total supply is intended to be fully unlocked.
• Governance Delegation: To participate in voting, tokenholders must "lock" their influence by delegating their OP (either to themselves or a third party), though the tokens themselves remain liquid unless otherwise specified by a specific grant or contract.

As of late 2024, the network has successfully completed multiple seasons of governance and several rounds of RetroPGF, progressively distributing the allocated supply to hundreds of projects and contributors.
