Key Takeaways

  • IBM closed about 13% lower on February 23, 2026, roughly $31 billion of market value, after Anthropic published a blog post on using Claude Code to modernize COBOL systems.
  • The trigger was a vendor blog post, not an earnings miss, a downgrade or a lost contract.
  • IBM and Anthropic had been partners since October 2025.
  • IBM's own numbers say about 40% of COBOL already runs on Windows, Linux and other distributed platforms, and the stock had fully regained the February loss by early June, on a quantum-computing rally rather than the code debate.
  • The real damage came from IBM itself: a July 14 preliminary warning on mainframe sales sent the stock down about 25% in a day, and after a stronger third quarter reported on October 21, 2026 it traded roughly where it had closed the day before Anthropic's post.
  • The same catalyst has moved other tickers in both directions, such as Cognizant (up) and Alibaba (down).

On a Monday in February 2026, one of the oldest technology companies in the world lost about $31 billion of market value because a startup published a blog post about a programming language from 1959.

That sentence is the whole puzzle.

This article works through what the post said, what IBM said back, what the stock did over the following eight months, and what the episode teaches about trading any company that Anthropic's next announcement might touch.

Every stock move below is a closing-price change taken from market data on the date shown; every company fact is linked to the company's own announcement or filing.

IBM Stock Drop: The Anthropic Date and What Set It Off

IBM shares fell about 13% on Monday, February 23, 2026, which wiped out roughly $31 billion of market value in a single session.

By market data it was the stock's largest one-day drop since October 2000.

No IBM earnings were released that morning, and no analyst downgrade or lost contract set it off.

The trigger was a post on Anthropic's own blog describing how its coding agent handles COBOL, the language that still runs much of the world's banking and government transaction processing.

Investors read the post as a threat to the expensive human work of modernizing legacy systems, and to the mainframe business that work sits on.

The post that did it never mentions IBM.

It is a product essay about one language, and the market supplied the rest.

What Did Anthropic Actually Claim About COBOL?

Anthropic claimed a change of timeline, not a conquest of the mainframe.

Its February 23, 2026 post, "COBOL Modernization with AI: Breaking the Cost Barrier," argues that "modernizing a COBOL system once required armies of consultants spending years mapping workflows," and that "with AI, teams can modernize their COBOL codebase in quarters instead of years."

It says Claude Code "can automate the exploration and analysis phases" of that work.

It names no customer, gives no percentage of code migrated and does not use the words IBM or mainframe.

Its framing is about cost: hundreds of billions of lines of COBOL in production, an estimated 95% of US ATM transactions running on it, and four modernization paths, rehost, refactor, rewrite and replace, that AI makes cheaper to analyze.

That is a vendor's description of its own product, not an audited benchmark or a verified customer case.

The gap between that essay and a $31 billion repricing is the subject of the rest of this article.

Were IBM and Anthropic Already Partners Before the Drop?

Yes.

IBM and Anthropic announced a partnership in October 2025 under which, in IBM's words, "Claude will be integrated into select IBM software products."

IBM's product announcement the same day said it would integrate Anthropic's models "directly into select IBM software products, starting with Project Bob," its AI-first development environment, which orchestrates Claude alongside Mistral, Llama and IBM's Granite models.

In its third-quarter 2025 earnings remarks IBM reported more than 8,000 of its own developers using Project Bob, with productivity gains averaging 45%.

Neither company changed the relationship before the February post.

The selloff was a sentiment event, not a business event: nothing in the commercial relationship between the two companies moved on February 23.

How Did IBM Respond, and Was the Selloff Fair?

IBM answered the same day with an argument; five months later its own numbers answered the market with a warning.

On February 23, 2026, Rob Thomas, IBM's Senior Vice President of Software and Chief Commercial Officer, published "Lost in Translation: What the AI code debate keeps getting wrong," which states that "roughly 40 percent of COBOL runs on Windows, Linux, and other distributed platforms" and that "AI strengthens the mainframe case, it does not weaken it."

The post never names Anthropic or Claude.

On the price, the February verdict reversed.

IBM regained the whole drop and set a record close of $329.23 on June 2, 2026, but that rally was about quantum computing and AI infrastructure, with a Barclays initiation and US government quantum support in the headlines, not about COBOL.

The code scare had faded by then; it had not been disproved.

The damage that stuck came from IBM's own books.

On July 14, 2026, a letter from CEO Arvind Krishna, filed with the SEC, released preliminary second-quarter results showing Infrastructure revenue down 7% on "a shortfall in our Z performance and the associated software stack, primarily in Transaction Processing"; the stock fell about 25% that day, its worst session in at least 58 years by market data.

The final second-quarter report on July 22 showed IBM Z revenue down 42% and cut the full-year constant-currency revenue-growth outlook to 4–5% from "more than 5%."

The third-quarter report of October 21, 2026 moved the other way: revenue of $17.1 billion, up 5%, Software up 8%, operating earnings per share of $2.95, up 11%, and a raised free-cash-flow outlook, with IBM Z still down 20%.

By October 26 the shares closed at $253.44, about 1.5% below the close before Anthropic's post, 23% below the June record and 17% above the July 14 close.

None of IBM's 2026 quarterly filings or earnings materials mentions Anthropic, COBOL or Project Bob; the one mention of Anthropic is in an exhibit to the annual report filed on February 24, 2026, the day after the drop, which lists it among ecosystem partners.

Was the selloff fair?

Fair as a reaction to a real question, excessive as a reaction to that post.

The mainframe shortfall that IBM itself reported in July was, in its own words, "a shortfall in our Z performance and the associated software stack, primarily in Transaction Processing," with "numerous large deals" that "failed to close on the timelines we expected," not Claude rewriting COBOL; the market priced an AI story in February and a sales story in July, and only the second one came from IBM's numbers.

Which Stocks Move When Anthropic Ships Something?

Three groups, in both directions: companies whose revenue sits on the work Claude automates, companies that sell Claude to their clients, and, since August 2026, the market's read on Anthropic itself.

Information-services and legal-data stocks took the first hit of 2026; IT-services partners have risen on announcements; and chip stocks rose on the day Anthropic's S-1 appeared.

The moves below are closing-price changes taken from market data on the dates shown; the company facts are linked to the companies' own announcements and filings.

  • Legal and information services, February 3, 2026. Four days after Anthropic published its Cowork plugins, including a legal plugin to "review documents, flag risks, and track compliance," Thomson Reuters fell about 14%, RELX about 14%, Wolters Kluwer about 10% and LSEG about 8% in a single session. The next day Infosys and TCS fell about 7% each.
  • IBM, February 23, 2026. The COBOL post; about 13%, as above.
  • ServiceNow, January 28, 2026. ServiceNow announced that "Claude is the default model powering ServiceNow Build Agent" and deployed Claude and Claude Code to more than 29,000 employees; the stock later fell about 4.5% on August 17 when Anthropic's second-quarter revenue was reported, the mirror image of the partnership trade.
  • Cognizant, July 27, 2026. Cognizant became "one of a small number of Global Premier Partners in the Claude Partner Network," and its shares rose more than 10% over the announcement day and the following session.
  • Accenture, September 18, 2026. Accenture and Anthropic announced a partnership in which each "expect to invest at least $1 billion over five years in AI safety"; the shares rose about 8% after hours and closed the next session up about 2.7%.
  • Alibaba, June and September 2026. Anthropic alleged, in a June 10 letter to US senators that was reported on June 24, that operators linked to Alibaba had used about 25,000 fraudulent accounts and some 28.8 million exchanges to harvest Claude outputs for training; its September 2026 threat report then described a separate, larger campaign of more than 151 million exchanges from about 3,500 Alibaba-linked accounts, which it called "the largest distillation attack we have ever measured." Alibaba's US shares fell about 2.7% and 4.7% on June 24 and 25, and about 2.7% on the report's publication in September. In October Anthropic said new defenses had cut the data such campaigns harvest "by around 90 to 99%."
  • Chipmakers, October 26, 2026. On the morning Anthropic's S-1 disclosed $8.9 billion of first-half compute spending and long-dated commitments, Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron and Intel rose during the session, and no software selloff was reported.

Three Kinds of Anthropic Catalysts

Product claims come first.

A blog post or model release that implies a task gets cheap, such as COBOL for IBM or the legal plugin for Thomson Reuters and RELX, moves fastest and reverses most.

Distribution deals come second.

A partner that will sell or embed Claude: Cognizant and Accenture rose on the day, ServiceNow's January deal is in the list for the reverse move it showed in August, and HCLTech's October 12, 2026 Global Premier Partnership drew no reported reaction.

When these move, they move the partner up on the day and leave open the question of whether the revenue follows.

Anthropic's own numbers come third.

Press reports of Anthropic's second-quarter revenue in August and the S-1 in October moved stocks that supply Anthropic (chips) and software stocks whose customers' budgets it competes for.

This category did not exist a year ago and will grow once ANT trades and reports quarterly.

How Should You Read the Next Anthropic Announcement?

Ask four questions before the market answers them for you.

Is the announcement substitution or integration?

Which revenue segment is exposed, and how large is it?

Does the company sell a platform or billable hours?

And has the company responded?

The second question is the one that does the work.

Identify the exposed revenue line, size it against the company's total, and the day-one move usually looks either reasonable or absurd on that arithmetic alone.

Then check whether the target company's own filings say anything at all: in IBM's case, eight months of 10-Qs, 8-Ks and earnings remarks never mention Anthropic, COBOL or Project Bob, which tells you how much of the February story lived in the market rather than in the business.

Anthropic ships on a visible cadence, so its announcements can be treated as scheduled tests of a thesis you already hold rather than as surprises.

Where Can You Trade a Move Like This Outside US Market Hours?

MEXC offers three ways to hold US stock exposure, and they differ in what you own.

RealStocks are real shares that follow the US securities market schedule, with regular and overnight sessions.

Tokenized Stocks give economic exposure and trade around the clock, but they are not the same legal claim as a share.

Stock Futures are USDT-settled, carry no ownership, and set leverage per contract.

The RealStocks vs Tokenized Stocks vs Stock Futures guide compares the three.

The US stocks on MEXC page lists what is available.

Anthropic itself is on the way to being tradable.

It filed its public S-1 on October 26, 2026 to list on Nasdaq as ANT, with the roadshow no earlier than November 10; until the first trade, the Anthropic pre-IPO perpetual on MEXC tracks the expected valuation, conveys no shares, and converts into a standard ANT stock futures contract once the listing completes.

What the filing says about the business is in the guide to whether Anthropic stock is public yet.

The routes that exist before Day One are compared in the guide to the three pre-IPO routes.

The Bottom Line

The first day after an AI announcement is a sentiment print.

The quarters that follow deliver the verdict, and in IBM's case the verdict came from IBM's own sales numbers rather than from anything Anthropic shipped.

IBM's year is the whole lesson in one stock: an AI story took 13% in a day and gave it back by June, and a hardware story took 25% in a day and had not given it back by October.

Use the framework above on the next announcement: find the exposed revenue line, size it, and check whether the company responded.
