SEI (SEI) Tokenomics

The SEI token is the native utility and governance asset of the Sei Network, an integrated Layer-1 blockchain designed for the high-speed exchange of digital assets. Launched in August 2023, the tokenomics are structured to support long-term network security, ecosystem growth, and decentralized governance.

Issuance and Supply Mechanism

The SEI token has a fixed maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) tokens. The issuance is governed by a multi-year vesting schedule designed to manage inflation and ensure a gradual entry of tokens into the circulating supply. While the initial supply was distributed across several categories, the network also utilizes an inflationary mechanism for staking rewards once the initial ecosystem reserve allocations are exhausted.

Allocation Mechanism

The distribution of SEI tokens is divided among five primary categories to balance the interests of the community, investors, and the development team.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The SEI token serves several critical functions within the network ecosystem:

• Network Fees: SEI is used to pay for transaction fees on the blockchain.
• Staking and Security: As a Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) network, SEI holders can delegate their tokens to validators. This process secures the network, and in return, stakers earn rewards.
• Governance: Token holders who stake their SEI gain the right to participate in protocol governance, allowing them to vote on future proposals.
• Native Collateral: SEI can be utilized as liquidity or collateral for decentralized applications (dApps) built on the network.
• Fee Markets: Users can pay tips to validators to prioritize their transactions, a portion of which can be shared with delegators.
• Trading Fees: The token can be used to settle fees on exchanges built natively on the Sei blockchain.

Staking Incentives

Validators and delegators are incentivized through staking rewards. As of early 2024, the advertised Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for staking was approximately 4.46%. Validators can set a commission rate, and delegators receive a pro-rata share of rewards minus this commission.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

The Sei Network employs a long-term vesting schedule that spans nine years, concluding in August 2031. This controlled release is intended to prevent market shocks and align stakeholders with the project's long-term success.

Vesting Details

• Ecosystem Reserve: 27% of this allocation was available at genesis, with the remaining 73% vesting over nine years.
• Binance Launchpool: This portion was fully vested early in the network's lifecycle.
• Team and Private Investors: These allocations are subject to gradual vesting schedules, with significant portions unlocking linearly over several years.
• Unbonding Period: For users who choose to unstake their SEI, there is a three-week (21-day) unbonding period during which the tokens are locked and do not earn rewards.

Upcoming Unlock Schedule

The network follows a monthly unlock pattern. Based on current projections for 2026, the network expects consistent monthly releases.

The unlock volume is expected to be highest through 2025, followed by a relative stabilization in 2026 and 2027 as the Ecosystem Reserve's early heavy commitments transition into steady releases for the Team and Foundation.
