Thieves Target Wrong Victim in Cryptocurrency Home Invasion

Armed robbers entered a Belgian residence in search of cryptocurrency and attacked a woman who did not have any. Cryptocurrency users became the target of rising violence 75 percent in 2025 across the globe.

An elderly doctor, who was 60 years old, was attacked unexpectedly. Last Saturday, armed robbers stormed her Antwerp home in search of cryptocurrency that she did not possess.

On Saturday, two masked men broke into her home in Antwerp at 9 pm. They were searching for a hardware wallet.

Mistaken Identity Leads to Violent Attack

They cuffed her and struck her, damaging her face. She was immediately taken to the hospital to be treated.

The woman said that she had no crypto, yet they took away some unknown objects. The suspects are being sought by police.

According to Kato Belmans, of the Antwerp Prosecutor, the victim receives assistance with victim services. The charges against the suspects include attempted extortion.

Belgian police declare that robbers were poorly informed. It is the third physical cyber attack in Belgium associated with crypto; the first was in 2022, and the second in 2024.

Cryptocurrency Attacks Explode Globally in 2025

Cryptocurrency holders are experiencing more physical attacks all over the world. Jameson Lopp gathered disturbing statistics: the number of cases increased in 2024 (41) to 2025 (72).

This is a seventy-five percent increase over the last year and the violence is not subsiding.

By January 2026, four attacks were already reported. Three of them took place in France in a matter of days, and the fourth took place in Belgium on Saturday.

Crypto violence has become a hot spot in France. On January 6, an attacker targeted a crypto investor, and additional ones occurred on the 9th and 10th.

On Friday morning, a 43-year-old man was taken hostage at his home in Saint-Leger-sous-Châteauneuf. The robbers were after his cryptocurrency.

The following day, the family of an executive was assaulted. His wife and children were bound and raped in their home.

According to local reports, the family was not selected randomly. Law enforcers believe that the attacks in France are organized crimes.

The attacks could be fueled by the recent jailing of a tax agent in France who had collected data on crypto investors and billionaires illegally.

The increase in violence demonstrates the two-sided nature of crypto. Online resources provide freedom and also invite the presence of malicious individuals. Millions of portable devices are stored in hardware wallets.

Investors are advised to maintain high levels of privacy by security experts. Personal risk increases with the advertisement of crypto ownership. The Belgian case demonstrates the way criminals can work on erroneous information.

Belgian and French police are still investigating. Officials are seeking interconnections of the recent attacks. False imprisonment and robbery with violence are some of the charges levelled against suspects.
