North Korean IT workers have been infiltrating crypto companies and decentralized finance (DeFi) projects for at least seven years, developing protocols. MetaMask developer Taylor Monahan stated that these workers are involved in more than 40 DeFi platforms, some of which are well-known names. Although their resumes claim “seven years of blockchain development experience,” they are linked to the North Korea-affiliated Lazarus Group, which has been associated with $7 billion in crypto thefts since 2017.

North Korean Traces in DRIFT Hack and Conference Contacts

The group is responsible for the $625 million Ronin Bridge in 2022, the $235 million WazirX in 2024, and the $1.4 billion Bybit heist in 2025. Drift Protocol announced that the recent $280 million hack was carried out by a North Korea state-linked group and involved months of preparation. Preliminary investigation revealed that team members were personally approached and hired by North Korean intermediaries at conferences. Titan Exchange founder Tim Ahhl described a Lazarus agent candidate who was qualified in video interviews but refused an in-person meeting.
