The conduct and consequences of the war on Iran have prompted many loyalists of President Donald Trump to question or even withdraw their support, but his post on Tuesday was the last straw for some of his remaining backers.
"A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Trump posted. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”
This is, “most certainly not what I voted for or intended for when I donated 12.8 bitcoin to Trump's team,” tweeted crypto investor Gary Cardone in response. He went on to explain that while his intentions were to “drain the swamp” and “stop war,” he is so disillusioned with the outcome that he is “left with the decision to never again support political ambitions of anyone.”
Cardone is far from the only Trump supporter to have broken with the president over his actions in Iran. His words were attached to a retweet of far-right commentator and longtime Trump loyalist Alex Jones, who said Trump’s threat to destroy a “whole civilization” would amount to “the definition of genocide.”
“Trump literally sounds like an unhinged super villain from a Marvel comic movie,” said Jones. “This is not what we voted for!"
Former congresswoman and Trump ally Marjorie Taylor Greene took things a step further, saying that the president needs to be removed from office.
“25th Amendment!” she posted above a screenshot of Trump’s threat. “Not a single bomb has dropped on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization. This is evil and madness.”
This is not the first time Greene has questioned the president’s mental capacity to serve.
On Sunday, Trump threatened to destroy Iranian power plants and bridges – the destruction of which could constitute war crimes – saying, “Open the f——in’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell.”
“Everyone in his administration that claims to be a Christian needs to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God and stop worshiping the President and intervene in Trump’s madness,” responded Greene. “He has gone insane, and all of you are complicit. ... This is not making America great again, this is evil.”
