The case involving Poland’s troubled crypto exchange Zondacrypto has taken another turn following reports that the CEO allegedly fled to Israel.

According to Polish media outlet Onet, Zondacrypto CEO Przemysław Kral has been in Israel for a week.

Polish prosecutors had recently opened a formal investigation into the exchange for alleged fraud and customer losses estimated at $97 million. However, the crisis has now been further complicated by the CEO’s flight to Israel.

According to prosecutors, Kral holds Israeli citizenship, which could complicate extradition and asset recovery plans, the report said.

4.5K BTC lost amid Zondacrypto governance lapses

Zondacrypto’s history has been marred by a lack of transparency. Although its operations are mostly based in Poland, the exchange is registered in Estonia under the BB Trade Estonia OÜ entity.

It was first founded in 2014 as BitBay by Sylwester Suszek. But the founder has been missing since 2022.

According to Kral, the founder’s disappearance led to a loss of access to a cold wallet holding 4,500 BTC (worth over $340 million at current prices). This was part of the exchange reserve.

Intriguingly, the board of the Estonian entity claimed a lack of knowledge of some of the information that has been made public.

In a statement on LinkedIn, a former board member, Georgi Džaniašvili, said the CEO, Kral, has not been able to provide them with ‘verifiable information’ on the exchange’s issues.

The board urged a proper investigation into the matter. But the crisis goes beyond governance failures.

Reportedly, Zondacrypto donated to several politicians and related entities, with the capital coming from Russia, according to Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Per the PM, about 30,000 Zondacrypto users may be affected, decrying the slow progress of crypto legislation.

Likewise, the exchange was the general sponsor of the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOL). The scandal has now seen the local sports community demanding the resignation of PKOL’s president, Radosław Piesiewicz, for damaging their reputation.

But most importantly, the crisis will likely reignite discussion on how the EU’s crypto framework (MiCA) applies to small players like Zondacrypto to ensure investor protection.

Final Summary

  • Poland has launched a probe into Zondacrypto amid alleged investors’ losses estimated at $97 million.
  • However, the crisis has deepened amid the revelation that the exchange CEO has fled to Israel and could complicate extradition efforts.
