Tate McRae Lands Her First Hit On A Chart She’s Never Seen Before

A year before she released I Used to Think I Could Fly, which is considered her debut album, Tate McRae delivered a project titled The One Day LP. That full-length included a single titled “Hung Up on You,” one of her earliest recordings. The tune dropped in 2017, years before The One Day LP, and now that McRae is a chart-topper and a Grammy-nominated superstar, it becomes a sudden smash.

“Hung Up on You” was released on seven-inch vinyl as part of Record Store Day alongside the track “One Day,” which was recorded live at YouTube’s New York City studio in 2020. Thanks to that special release, “Hung Up on You” becomes a bestseller in the United Kingdom for the first time, launching on a trio of charts, and it even earns McRae her first placement on one roster.

On this week’s Official Vinyl Singles chart, which ranks the bestselling tunes available on wax in the U.K., “Hung Up on You” opens at No. 16. It marks McRae’s first trip to the format-specific rundown.

“Hung Up on You” Joins the Record Store Day Surge

While vinyl records have become big business once again in the music industry, the Official Vinyl Singles chart is not typically one of the busiest rankings in the U.K. There are usually a number of new releases that make it to the list, but thanks to Record Store Day, this may be the most exciting frame ever on the rundown.

All 40 spaces on the current edition of the Official Vinyl Singles chart are filled by debuts. 15 cuts launch ahead of “Hung Up on You,” including songs by Mark Ronson, Robert Plant, Olivia Rodrigo, Muse, and David Bowie. The tally is led by Taylor Swift’s “Elizabeth Taylor,” which unsurprisingly beats every other title to become the top seller on wax in the nation.

McRae simultaneously scores her fourth appearance on the Official Physical Singles chart, which looks at the top-selling songs not only on vinyl, but also CD and cassette. She lands a new hit on the tally for the first time in more than four years, and “Hung Up on You,” which launches at No. 16, stands out as her third-highest-rising tune – or put another way, one of her worst performers.

“That Way,” which debuted in January 2022, topped out at No. 26. “You,” a collaboration with both Regard and Troye Sivan, nearly netted all three artists a No. 1, but instead it peaked at No. 2. “You Broke Me First,” one of McRae’s earliest commercial wins and her initial placement on the Official Physical Singles ranking, peaked at No. 4 after arriving in December 2020.

McRae also finds her way to the Official Singles Sales chart, the most competitive sales roster for songs. “Hung Up on You” nearly matches the No. 16 position it reaches on both the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles tallies, but instead it enters one space lower, at No. 17.

Throughout her career, McRae has earned a total of 13 hits on the Official Singles Sales roster, more than twice as many when compared to both the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles tallies – combined. “Hung Up on You” marks her first new top 20 smash in nearly three years. “Greedy,” which may be considered her most familiar tune, danced all the way to No. 18.

The last time McRae pushed to a more impressive position was the year prior, in 2022. “10:35,” a collaboration with electronic dance producer Tiësto, surged to No. 8, joining “You Broke Me First” as her only top 10 bestsellers in the U.K.
