Trump flies into rage over reporter's claims about shooting: 'This was a hit on me!'

President Donald Trump lashed out at an ABC News correspondent in a Monday afternoon Truth Social post.

Jonathan Karl told ABC's "This Week" that the 79-year-old president called him last Sunday on his land line to ask how he was doing after a gunman was arrested at the previous evening's White House Correspondents Dinner, and Trump bitterly disputed the claim on social media.

"Jonathan Karl, of ABC Fake News, made a statement that I called him early in the morning, the day after the assassination attempt, to ask whether or not HE was OK," Trump griped. "No, this was a hit on ME, not HIM, and I didn’t make such a call, why would I do that?"

"He called me, but I didn’t take his call — He just confirmed that to me when he called again," Trump added. "I would say that’s very dishonest reporting. He’s trying to make himself look important but, I’m not surprised, because it comes from ABC Fake News!"

Alleged gunman Cole Tomas Allen has been charged by federal prosecutors with attempting to assassinate the president in a shooting that left a Secret Service agent shot and wounded, and he has also been charged with the discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro claims that Allen shot the Secret Service agent, but other law enforcement officials have not said whose bullet struck the agent.
