CEBU, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to convene his counterparts from Cambodia and Thailand on Thursday, May 7, on the sidelines of the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
The three — Marcos, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul — are set to meet in Cebu province at 6 pm, ASEAN chair Philippines announced in a media advisory.
The three are then set to release a press statement.
In mid-2025, tensions between Cambodia and Thailand erupted over a border dispute. In October 2025, during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, the two countries agreed to a ceasefire that was then disrupted in early December 2025.
Weeks later, the two countries agreed on a fragile ceasefire brokered in late December 2025 or just before the Philippines took over as chair of ASEAN.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recently assumed leadership of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), which monitors the border situation between the two ASEAN countries.
The Cebu summit is the first leaders-level meeting of the bloc with the Philippines as chair. – Rappler.com
