Blood Of My Blood’ Season Finale

If you are already missing Outlander: Blood of my Blood, don’t worry, because production is well underway for season two and while we don’t have a confirmed release date, this second season could be hitting our screens sooner than expected.

However, now is the time to dive deeply into this crazy season finale, as I caught up with the cast to talk about the future of their characters and what might be waiting for them in season two.

Season one ended on a major cliffhanger for both couples. Ellen and Brian are finally reunited after she manages to get out of the arranged marriage with Malcolm Grant. Indeed, it is instead Dougal who gets married off to Malcolm’s sister, because Ellen found out that Colum broke his promise to never harm Brian and tried to have him killed.

However, when a drunken and heartbroken Malcolm finds Ellen and Brian escaping together, he becomes mad with rage and tries to stop them. In a violent fight, Brian is left with no other choice than to kill Malcolm. Ellen and Brian hide the body and run for their lives before anyone start to suspect them.

Later, they meet Murtagh, who had been waiting for them at a remote hideout in the forest. But after a night together, the couple wakes up to the fiery crosses burning in the distance, which is a call to the men of the clans in case of a Jacobite rebellion. If Brian doesn’t return to his own clan to join the battle, he will be considered a traitor and could be executed.

While this cliffhanger will probably have fans come up with many theories before season two, one of the most important events of this season finale is that Brian and Murtagh finally reconcile and the latter does everything he can to help and protect the young couple on the run, despite his broken heart.

Ellen and Brian have both been betrayed and rejected by their families so many times, but here, Murtagh shows to be their one true friend and the only person they can trust.

I asked Slater and Roy about this beautiful parallel of choosing between their blood, their own families, and their chosen family which the three of them seem to have created.

Roy said, ‘’That’s a lovely wee opinion! It was a scene that we shot that you wouldn’t necessarily think too much when you’re watching it, but I think for me it clicked, and for Harriet and Rory too. We call it the wood chopping scene, this montage and we’re just there, Murtagh is roasting a rabbit, Brian’s chopping wood, Ellen is gathering wood and, when we were filming that, we were like ‘Look at us! Look at the three of us!’ When we watched it back, it was nice to just see those three guys, getting along, it’s all very sympathetical!’’

Slater added: ‘’And I think it’s very beautiful that, you know, Murtagh clearly does hold a torch for Ellen, but he does it from a distance and he says, ‘I’ll never ask anything of you, but please let me find my happiness in you two.’’’

The two actors then admitted to being very emotional watching this scene of Murtagh being so selfless and ready to put his love for Ellen aside to support them.

On Murtagh, Slater said, ‘’(Rory Alexander) is a phenomenal actor! And Murtagh is such a likeable character, he is so open and pure and really does love this woman, that he doesn’t actually know! They’ve never really spoken! But he’s loved her from afar and he truly did see a future with her and was genuinely heartbroken when it turned out his best friend actually had a thing with her.’’

Roy added: ‘’To go to one extreme to the other, I think it’s such an amazing point for his character, because we see the Murtagh that people know from Outlander a lot more in this scene.’’

This scene was a turning point for Ellen too, because the only men she thought she could trust after her father’s death all turned on her, blackmailed her and betrayed her many times.

Slater said, ‘’It’s so true because I think all these men have tried to control her in one in some way or another, except for her dad who unfortunately passed away. But he was her best friend, and she was so devastated because now she’s so vulnerable.’’

She added: ‘’But you’re right, Brian and Murtagh are her first experience of truly protective, selfless men who aren’t gonna use her as a pawn in a game.’’
