It is very difficult to please fans of one of the most famous animes of all time with a live-action adaptation, but One Piece somehow managed to do just that when it debuted in August 2023. Now, it has a release date for season 2, two and a half years after that.
After a lot of early promotion for the season, Netflix has announced that One Piece Season 2: Into the Grand Line will arrive on March 10, 2026. That’s a gap of two and a half years, which is pushing it even for a streaming production, as the space between seasons usually ranges from 1.5 to 3 years these days. But 2.5-3 years is pretty rare, even for big shows.
One Piece is a big show with a lot of elaborate sets and CGI work, so it would take longer than most. There is a zero percent chance Netflix gets through the entire, hilariously enormous source material, which has 1,100 episodes since 1999. No, that is not a typo.
Netflix will have to figure out an extremely abridged arc for it, and it appears they are pushing forward to make that happen. Season 3 of One Piece was greenlit a long time ago, so no matter what happens with season 2, it’s going to return for more. Again, it is really rare that a live-action adaptation pleases fans, but One Piece season 1 racked up a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is as high as most of Netflix’s high-scored animated series, of which it has plenty. Most of those names you would not recognize, but a few stand out to me. Mikaela Hoover recently had a role as Kat Grant in Superman. Katey Segal was a big star in Sons of Anarchy. Of course, I remember Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes. But I’d argue the biggest name here is David Dastmalchian, who has appeared in Dexter Resurrection, Murderbot, Oppenheimer, Dune and The Suicide Squad in the last couple years alone. Maybe you don’t know the name, but you’d know him if you saw him. See below.
