Hit-making rapper JT has continued to step into her own since launching her career as a solo artist two years ago. Last year, the former City Girls star released her debut solo mixtape City Cinderella and embarked on the accompanying City Cinderella Tour shortly thereafter. Earlier this year, she released the standalone single “Ran Out,” which got a coveted remix treatment from Kaytranada over the summer.
Now, JT is back with another new single, “Girls Gone Wild,” further showcasing her talents as an artist standing on her own. On the upbeat track, named in honor of the onetime dominant adult entertainment franchise, JT demonstrates that she can handily rap over any kind of production with ease.
“If you wanna take a ride with a bad b***h / Hop inside, you can see why they mad, b***h / T*****s bounce to the beat of the bassline / Pretty a** face, make these h**s commit hate crimes,” she raps on the track. “I’m shakin’ a**, then I laugh, let me stop, child / We in a pool topless, Girls Gone Wild / Sex appeal get us in, we don’t need cash / I’m with the Girls Gone Wild.”
JT might always project an image of confidence, but that doesn’t mean all observers see the same image. “Every day, I’m working to fight a narrative,” the Miami-bred MC told Cosmopolitan this summer. “I’m fighting to be myself versus what the consumer who knows me from back then wants me to be. If, when I put new music out, my first fan is like, ‘What the f**k is this?’ I’m ready for that. If only 10 people resonate with the song, these are my 10. If only 30 people resonate, there’s my 30.”
Of course, she’s never one to let outside voices get to her, and especially doesn’t let those voices drown out her own – a mindset constantly communicated to her fans through her music. “I’ve always been who I am, which is a very powerful, talented, vocal, say-what-the-f**k-I-want-to say person,” she said. “I never not did what the f**k I wanted to do.”
