  • The FBI is assisting as local police treat the case as a possible abduction.

  • Guthrie’s medical needs make her safe return increasingly urgent.

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of TODAY show host Savannah Guthrie, is now being investigated as a possible abduction. The 84-year-old was reported missing on February 1 after failing to attend church in Tucson, Arizona.

Authorities say Nancy, who has limited mobility, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills on January 31. Her personal items, including her phone and wallet, were left behind.

TMZ Receives Alleged Ransom Note for Nancy Guthrie Demanding Bitcoin

On February 3, TMZ reported receiving an email containing an alleged ransom demand for Nancy Guthrie’s release.

The note reportedly requested a “substantial amount” of Bitcoin, estimated in the millions, and included a deadline.

The message also described property damage inside the home and referenced details known only to someone familiar with the scene. TMZ confirmed that the Bitcoin wallet address provided in the note was legitimate and has turned all materials over to investigators.

Authorities Treat Case as Abduction with FBI Involvement

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it is working closely with the FBI and treating all leads seriously.

In a statement on social media, the department said any information, including reported ransom demands, is being reviewed by detectives.

Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that evidence collected at the home, including damage and personal effects left behind, supports the theory that Nancy was taken against her will.

Medical Concerns Add Urgency to Search Efforts

Nancy Guthrie requires life-saving medication, which authorities say she did not take with her. Sheriff Nanos warned that the absence of these treatments could be fatal. The department has enlisted drones, dogs, volunteers, and Border Patrol in the search.

Family members told investigators that Nancy would not have been able to leave her home unaided. Savannah Guthrie has issued a public statement thanking law enforcement and supporters, asking anyone with information to call the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
