Federal Judge Cynthia Rufe showed frustration after the Trump administration failed to comply with her order to return a slavery exhibit to a museum at the site of George Washington's former home in Philadelphia. In her initial Monday ruling, Rufe invoked George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984," warning against allowing the government to "dissemble and disassemble historical truths." She stated, "As if the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell's 1984 now existed, with its motto 'Ignorance is Strength,' this Court is now asked to determine whether the federal government has the power it claims—to dissemble and disassemble historical truths when it has some domain over historical facts," she said, adding it does not. After the Trump administration appealed without complying, Rufe issued a late-Wednesday ruling setting a Friday deadline for restoration, emphasizing her court's authority to enforce its own orders.
