Lamborghini Cancels Fully Electric Supercar Plans Due to Weak Customer Demand

Luxury car manufacturer Lamborghini has canceled its plans to produce a fully electric supercar after recognizing that its customers are not prepared to abandon traditional gasoline engines. Weak demand has forced the brand to reconsider its electric vehicle strategy, marking a significant shift from its earlier electrification ambitions.

Nearly three years ago, Lamborghini introduced the Lanzador concept, presented as a bold step into the future of electric performance cars with an initial production target of 2028. Market conditions led to a delay to 2029, and development was officially halted at the end of 2025. According to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the decision resulted from customer feedback indicating most buyers strongly prefer V8 or V12 engines, with interest in fully electric supercars described as nearly nonexistent.

The company spent over a year reviewing the situation, consulting dealers and loyal customers before concluding that investing heavily in an unwanted product would create financial risk. Instead of proceeding with uncertain demand, Lamborghini chose to terminate the pure electric project. While abandoning full EV plans, the company is not retreating from electrification entirely. A hybrid version of the Lanzador is now being prepared for release later this decade, allowing the brand to combine electric assistance with traditional gasoline power.

This hybrid-focused strategy extends to the next generation of the Lamborghini Urus, which will continue as a plug-in hybrid rather than transitioning to full electric. Lamborghini believes this approach balances environmental responsibility with customer expectations. Across Europe, manufacturers face increasing pressure to reduce emissions, but Lamborghini maintains that electric cars lack the emotional sound and feel central to its identity, making plug-in hybrids a viable middle ground.

By canceling its full EV plans, Lamborghini demonstrates that customer preference remains its top priority, choosing evolution over revolution to preserve performance and passion in future models. This contrasts with companies like Lucid Motors that exclusively offer electric vehicles and must continue innovating to attract buyers. The decision highlights the ongoing tension between regulatory pressures for electrification and consumer preferences in the luxury automotive segment.
