  • Karoline Leavitt rejected reports of an Iranian drone threat to the U.S. homeland.
  • Her statement responding to ABC News quickly triggered widespread public debate online.
  • Critics questioned justification for U.S. strikes against Iran following the statement.

A routine press secretary post calling out a news network has accidentally handed the American public one of the sharpest questions of the year. Karoline Leavitt, Assistant to the President and White House Press Secretary, took to X on Wednesday to go after ABC News over its breaking report that the FBI had warned California police departments of a potential Iranian drone attack on the West Coast.

Her rebuttal was pointed and largely justified on the facts. The FBI alert in question explicitly described the intelligence as “unverified.” Iran had only “allegedly aspired” to conduct the attack. The bureau stated it had no information on timing, method, target, or perpetrators. Leavitt closed her post with a line that was meant to reassure the public:

“To be clear: No such threat from Iran to our homeland exists, and it never did.”

The Question Nobody Expected

Within minutes, thousands of Americans read that sentence and arrived at the same uncomfortable place. Questions were raised for the ongoing American military assault on Iran.

One user captured the mood in one sentence: “If Iran isn’t a threat to our homeland then why we bombing them?”*

The post spread fast. Screenshots were archived. The question embedded itself into the news cycle in a way a formal press briefing rarely achieves.

However, defenders of Leavitt’s post argued she was addressing something narrow: the specific ABC drone story, not the entire basis for going to war. Analyst Riko D. Ken pointed out that Iran’s nuclear weapons programme represented a separate and serious threat, one Washington argued had to be eliminated before it matured into something the US could not contain.

What the FBI Actually Said

The original FBI alert, distributed to California law enforcement at the end of February, was far more careful than ABC’s headline suggested. It described intelligence acquired about Iranian aspirations to launch a drone strike from a vessel off the US coast, but was explicit that this was unverified, that the timing was unknown, the target unspecified, and the perpetrators unidentified.

President Trump, asked directly about the alert, gave an answer that satisfied almost nobody: “It’s being investigated. All we can do is take them as they come.”
