House enters day 2 of plenary debates on anti-dynasty bill

MANILA, Philippines – The House of Representatives continues deliberations on the anti-political dynasty proposal on Wednesday, March 18, with suffrage chairperson and bill sponsor Zia Alonto Adiong defending the merits of the measure against House critics.

On the first day of deliberations on Tuesday, March 17, numerous lawmakers challenged the effectiveness of an anti-dynasty bill that would, hypothetically, still allow dozens of people from the same family to hold public office at the same time.

Adiong insisted that the present version of the bill balances the constitutional mandate to prohibit dynasties while recognizing every citizen’s right to vote and be voted upon.
