Cardano has received a Google-linked nod in the race to prepare blockchains for quantum risks.

A March 30, 2026, paper from Google Quantum AI and co-authors placed Cardano second in quantum readiness, behind Algorand.

Google Paper Ranks Cardano Near The Top

The paper is titled “Securing Elliptic Curve Cryptocurrencies against Quantum Vulnerabilities.” It examines how future quantum computers could weaken today’s crypto systems.

The authors said cryptographically relevant quantum computers would mark a sharp change for digital security.

Within that review, Cardano was ranked as the second-most quantum-ready blockchain worldwide. Algorand was placed first, based on the summary provided with the paper.

The ranking drew notice because Google researchers worked with Ethereum Foundation and Stanford contributors.

Cardano’s ranking also reflects work on post-quantum tools. The network is developing Nightstream, a planned lattice-based replacement for current zero-knowledge systems. The project has been linked to research input from Google and Microsoft Research.

Google Cloud Ties Add Weight To Midnight Plans

Google Cloud has also joined Midnight as one of the network’s initial launch validators. Midnight is Cardano’s privacy-focused sidechain for protected data and regulated use cases.

The move connects Google infrastructure with a network preparing for its mainnet debut in early April 2026.

In early 2026, Google Cloud registered stake pool GCW3 on Cardano’s preview testnet. That step gave Google engineers direct exposure to Cardano’s staking and delegation model. It also showed protocol-level participation, not only a cloud service role.

The partnership also uses Google Confidential Computing and Mandiant monitoring tools. Developers on Midnight may also access up to $200,000 in Web3 startup credits. The support is aimed at teams building privacy and compliance tools on Midnight.

Quantum Risk Remains a Wider Blockchain Issue

The paper warns that quantum progress could pressure many blockchains, not only Bitcoin. The paper summary says 30 to 35 percent of the Bitcoin supply is tied to older keys.

Those coins are seen as theoretically vulnerable if quantum systems mature. Ethereum, Solana, and other chains may also need faster upgrades.

The authors wrote that Shor’s algorithm could break secp256k1 with fewer resources than many expected. The authors estimate the attack could run with about 1,200 logical qubits and 90 million Toffoli gates.

They used a zero-knowledge proof to validate the result without releasing attack details.

The paper states that vulnerable communities should migrate to post-quantum cryptography “without delay.” It also points to smart contracts, proof-of-stake systems, and dormant assets as areas needing review.

The authors also said technical steps may need public policy support during any migration.
