SUI (SUI) 토크노믹스

The SUI token is the native asset of the Sui network, a Layer-1 blockchain designed for high-throughput and low-latency asset management. The tokenomics are structured to align incentives between users, validators, and token holders while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the network.

Issuance Mechanism

SUI has a strictly capped maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) tokens. At the mainnet launch on May 3, 2023, approximately 5% of the total supply was in circulation. The remaining tokens are released according to a phased schedule designed to maintain network stability and support long-term growth.

The network employs an inflationary mechanism for the first year of its life to bootstrap security. Specifically, 1.00 billion SUI (10% of the maximum supply) is designated for reward subsidies. These subsidies, combined with transaction fees, form the pool of rewards distributed to network participants.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial distribution of SUI tokens was heavily focused on ecosystem development and rewarding early contributors. The following table outlines the primary allocation categories:

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The SUI token serves four primary functions within the ecosystem:

• Gas Fees: All network transactions require SUI to pay for computation and storage. Gas prices are set at the start of each epoch (approximately 24 hours), providing predictable costs for users.
• Staking (DPoS): Sui uses a Delegated Proof-of-Stake mechanism. Token holders can stake SUI to validators to secure the network and earn a share of rewards.
• Governance: While an active on-chain governance process was not fully implemented as of early 2024, the SUI token is intended to provide voting power for future protocol upgrades and treasury management.
• Liquidity: SUI acts as a native asset for on-chain liquidity, used in trading pairs and DeFi protocols for borrowing, lending, and yield generation.

The Storage Fund

A unique feature of Sui’s economics is the Storage Fund. When users pay gas fees, a portion is allocated to "computation" (distributed to current validators) and another portion to "storage." These storage fees are deposited into the fund to incentivize future validators to maintain data created by past users. The fund itself is staked, and the resulting rewards are distributed to validators to offset storage costs.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

Sui utilizes a phased vesting schedule that extends beyond 2030. Tokens are generally locked in "epochs," and specific cohorts are subject to multi-year vesting.

Staking Locks

When a user stakes SUI, the tokens are locked for the duration of the current epoch. Users may request to withdraw their stake at any time, but the tokens only become liquid and the request becomes active at the start of the next epoch.

Unlocking Timeline

The release of tokens into the circulating supply is managed through a series of scheduled unlock events:

• Community Access Program: Tokens sold via the "Recognition Sale" (at $0.03 per token) were fully unlocked at mainnet launch. Tokens sold via the general sale (at $0.10 per token) were distributed over 12 months, with one-third unlocked at launch and the remainder released monthly.
• Private Investors and Team: Significant unlock milestones occurred in 2024. For example, approximately 1.4 billion SUI was scheduled to unlock for private investors in Q2 2024.
• 2025 Projections: In Q1 2025, approximately 242 million SUI (2.42% of total supply) is expected to unlock. By Q2 2025, an additional 227 million SUI (2.27% of total supply) is scheduled for release, distributed among private investors (97.3M), the ecosystem (81.7M), staking rewards (77.4M), and the team (48.0M).

The gradual release strategy is intended to prevent market oversaturation while providing the necessary liquidity for the growing DeFi ecosystem, which surpassed $1.76 billion in Total Value Locked (TVL) by mid-2025.
