TLDR

  • Vitalik Buterin says he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute.
  • The institute received SHIB tokens donated by Buterin in 2021.
  • The group reportedly converted about $500 million from the donated SHIB tokens.
  • Buterin raised concerns about political advocacy linked to AI risk policies.

Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin said he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute. The group previously received Shiba Inu tokens from him in 2021.

Buterin explained that the organization’s strategy has shifted since the donation. He said its current direction differs from the original goals presented to him.

The Future of Life Institute received the tokens during a period when developers sent large amounts of meme coins to Buterin’s wallet. The donation later became one of the largest crypto-linked charitable contributions.

Donation originally linked to broader existential risk research

Buterin said the institute initially presented a plan focused on reducing existential risks. The roadmap included concerns around artificial intelligence, biology, and nuclear threats.

The plan also involved initiatives promoting peace and better knowledge sharing. According to Buterin, these goals encouraged him to support the organization with SHIB tokens.

In 2021, developers of Shiba Inu and other dog-themed tokens sent large token allocations to Buterin. Many projects used his public wallet as part of their marketing strategies.

Buterin later redirected large portions of those tokens to charities and public causes. The Future of Life Institute was among the groups that received a donation.

Buterin questions current advocacy around AI policy

Buterin said the organization’s focus later moved toward cultural and political advocacy around artificial intelligence risks. He described this shift as different from the strategy presented at the time of the donation.

“My worry is that large-scale coordinated political action with big money pools is a thing that can easily lead to unintended outcomes,” Buterin wrote.

He added that such efforts may trigger backlash and create fragile solutions. He also warned that large coordinated efforts could become authoritarian even if that was not the initial aim.

The Future of Life Institute states that its mission is to reduce extreme risks and guide transformative technologies to benefit humanity. The group also supports policies aimed at ensuring AI development benefits society.

On its website, the organization says AI development should improve lives globally rather than only increasing corporate profits.

Concerns about technical safeguards in AI and biosynthesis tools

Buterin also commented on proposals involving technical safeguards in advanced technologies. Some plans include restrictions in biosynthesis devices and artificial intelligence models.

These systems would refuse to produce harmful instructions or outputs. Supporters believe such safeguards could reduce misuse of emerging technologies.

Buterin said this approach may not be reliable. He explained that users can often bypass restrictions through jailbreaks or model modifications.

“I view this as a very fragile solution,” he said. “There are many ways to jailbreak, fine-tune or otherwise get around such restrictions.”

Cointelegraph reported that it contacted the Future of Life Institute for comment. The organization had not responded at the time of publication.

SHIB donation later converted into about $500 million

Buterin also addressed the value of the SHIB tokens sent to the organization. He said he originally expected the group to convert a smaller portion of the tokens.

“I thought that surely they would cash out at most $10–25M,” he wrote. He added that he believed the market depth would limit larger sales.

However, the institute reportedly converted around $500 million worth of SHIB tokens. The amount was far higher than his initial expectation.

In June 2021, the organization announced a $25 million multi-year grant program. It said the initiative was made possible with support from Buterin and the Shiba Inu community.

The funds were intended to support research and programs related to global risk and emerging technologies.

The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For

The post The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Visions of future technology are often prescient about the broad strokes while flubbing the details. The tablets in “2001: A Space Odyssey” do indeed look like iPads, but you never see the astronauts paying for subscriptions or wasting hours on Candy Crush.  Channel factories are one vision that arose early in the history of the Lightning Network to address some challenges that Lightning has faced from the beginning. Despite having grown to become Bitcoin’s most successful layer-2 scaling solution, with instant and low-fee payments, Lightning’s scale is limited by its reliance on payment channels. Although Lightning shifts most transactions off-chain, each payment channel still requires an on-chain transaction to open and (usually) another to close. As adoption grows, pressure on the blockchain grows with it. The need for a more scalable approach to managing channels is clear. Channel factories were supposed to meet this need, but where are they? In 2025, subnetworks are emerging that revive the impetus of channel factories with some new details that vastly increase their potential. They are natively interoperable with Lightning and achieve greater scale by allowing a group of participants to open a shared multisig UTXO and create multiple bilateral channels, which reduces the number of on-chain transactions and improves capital efficiency. Achieving greater scale by reducing complexity, Ark and Spark perform the same function as traditional channel factories with new designs and additional capabilities based on shared UTXOs.  Channel Factories 101 Channel factories have been around since the inception of Lightning. A factory is a multiparty contract where multiple users (not just two, as in a Dryja-Poon channel) cooperatively lock funds in a single multisig UTXO. They can open, close and update channels off-chain without updating the blockchain for each operation. Only when participants leave or the factory dissolves is an on-chain transaction…
