The Super Mario Galaxy Movie debuted to an estimated $372.5 million globally in its opening weekend, the largest worldwide box office launch since Avatar: Fire and Ash in December 2025.

Universal Pictures, owned by Comcast, distributed the film across more than 4,000 screens in the U.S. and Canada. It averaged $30,795 per location — a strong number, especially given that most tickets were sold at children’s pricing.

The domestic three-day Easter weekend haul came in at $130.9 million. Over the first five days, the film is projected to reach $190.1 million domestically, according to Comscore.

International markets added another $182.4 million to the total. That puts the global opening well clear of most 2026 releases.

Roth analyst Eric Handler said the film could earn between $160 million and $200 million in its first Wednesday-through-Sunday stretch, citing Mario’s status as one of the world’s biggest gaming franchises with over 430 million copies sold worldwide.

The film reunites most of the core creative team from the 2023 original, including producers Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, director duo Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and cast members Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key.

The original Super Mario Bros. Movie opened to $204 million domestically over its first five days in 2023 and finished with $1.36 billion worldwide.

Hollywood’s Wider Recovery

The Galaxy Movie’s debut lifted the weekend’s total domestic top 10 take to $195.7 million. That pushed Hollywood’s year-to-date box office to $2.05 billion, up 26% compared to the same period in 2025, per Comscore.

Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary held at No. 2 for its third weekend with $30.7 million. The Ryan Gosling sci-fi film now sits at $217.2 million domestically and $420.7 million worldwide. Mexico alone accounts for $119.4 million of its international total.

A24’s The Drama debuted in third with $14.4 million across 3,087 screens. The R-rated romantic comedy starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson has already cleared its production budget in its first weekend, including international ticket sales of $28 million combined.

Other Performances This Weekend

Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers earned another $5.8 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $149.6 million. Globally, it has now reached an estimated $332.2 million, placing it among the year’s top three films worldwide.

Universal’s Reminders of Him rounded out the top five with $2.2 million.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary together accounted for nearly $192.6 million of the weekend’s $195.7 million domestic top 10 total.
