The last straw: MAGA bailing on Trump out of anger and 'self preservation'

According to WIRED, “it seems that every day brings with it a new faction of MAGAworld getting angry with President Donald Trump over something he says or does.” Now, even some of Trump’s most previously loyal supporters are giving up on him, whether because they’re disappointed in his behavior or out of a basic sense of “self preservation.”

There are plenty of examples one could point to that explain MAGA’s exodus from Trump.

Months ago, for example, podcaster Joe Rogan — who gave Trump a major electoral boost by endorsing him in the final hours of his 2024 campaign — questioned the “Gestapo” tactics used by ICE, was later disappointed by the president’s evasiveness regarding the Epstein files, then criticized the war on Iran. Far-right commentator Alex Jones — who has supported Trump since early in his first campaign — has repeatedly questioned the president’s mental fitness in recent weeks. Far-right provocateur Nick Fuentes has declared “MAGA is dead,” saying, “Trump, you don’t have any young fans anymore.” And multiple former Trump backers have suggested that he may be the antichrist amid his baffling conflict with the Pope.

As WIRED notes, this turn against the president is surprising because MAGA is not only “the most powerful US political movement in recent decades,” but is “akin to a cult of personality where supporters have generally been willing to back Trump no matter what he says.”

But with defections from MAGA on the rise, that’s not only bad news for Trump, but for a GOP that is increasingly nervous about the midterms as polling suggests voters may punish the president’s party at the ballot box.

“For these voters, the fact that the criticism is coming from Trump’s former allies matters a lot,” said Dan Pfeiffer, former adviser to President Barack Obama. “When the criticism comes from someone with whom they share ideological affinity, it’s far more likely to land. One clip of Tucker Carlson attacking Trump is more effective than a thousand clips of Gavin Newsom, Hakeem Jeffries, or Pod Save America making the same point.”

Others who see the writing on the wall may be bailing on Trump out of self-interest.

“I think all of this breaking from Trump on different issues like Epstein, the war in Iran, and the economy is really about self-preservation,” said Democratic strategist Mike Nellis. “They only care about themselves. For all these MAGA influencers, it’s very much about their creator rewards, their advertisers, and growing their audiences. So they’re going to go wherever the wind takes them.”

As if to prove his point, Nick Fuentes has been blunt about his thoughts on future elections, saying, "In '26 I'm voting Democrat, and in 2028 I'm going to vote in the Republican primary for an America First candidate. And if there is no America First candidate, I'm going to sit out."
