Another ex-Trump attorney tapped to lead investigation of political foes: report

Another one of President Donald Trump's former attorneys has landed a gig investigating the president's political foes, according to a new report.

The New York Times reported on Saturday, citing "a senior law enforcement official," that Joseph diGenova has been tapped by the Trump Department of Justice to lead a "sprawling inquiry" into whether federal prosecutors committed crimes while they investigated Trump during his first term. The report added that diGenova is expected to split time between Miami and Fort Pierce, where a grand jury overseen by Trump-friendly judge Aileen Cannon has been convened.

DiGenova, a former U.S. Attorney during the Ronald Reagan administration, will hold the title of counselor to the attorney general, the report says, and he was assigned to the Southern District of Florida, where his work will be overseen by another Trump ally, U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones.

DiGenova represented Trump during his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He is stepping into a role left vacant after a career prosecutor, Maria Medetis Long, was removed from the case, according to the report.

"Together, the moves show how the Justice Department under Mr. Trump’s control has been willing to embrace politically charged tactics and unorthodox personnel decisions in its efforts to satisfy his demands to prosecute his perceived foes — even as other prosecutors loyal to him have encountered forceful pushback from courts against his wide-ranging retribution campaign," the report reads in part.
