Rising gas prices stemming from President Donald Trump's military operations in Iran are pressuring Republican incumbents in competitive House districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with businesses and voters reporting significant financial strain.

Gasoline prices have surged to an average of $4.05 per gallon nationwide since Trump launched strikes against Iran in late February, and small business owners are feeling acute pressure, reported the Washington Post.

Marvel Produce, a wholesaler in New York, is spending over 25 percent more to fuel its 17 delivery trucks. The company has been forced to increase prices charged to restaurants, caterers, and hotels. Co-owner Mike Scicchitano, a 30-year industry veteran, called 2026 "the worst year in my career, besides covid and 2008."

His wife, co-owner Dari Sonera-Scicchitano, said she is considering voting in midterm elections for the first time because "we need change," specifically an end to the war and lower fuel prices.

New York's 17th Congressional District, where voters chose Vice President Kamala Harris for president but Republican Rep. Mike Lawler for Congress in 2024, illustrates the political stakes. Conversations with nearly two dozen district residents show nearly universal concern about elevated gas prices affecting household budgets, though some remain confident prices will decline.

Stephen Jamieson, 78, a crossing guard who supported Trump in 2024, said increased gas costs have added approximately $50 monthly to his expenses. He expressed frustration that Trump "doesn't care" about rising fuel prices.

Danielle Cifuni, 42, who owns two Playa Bowl franchises in the Bronx area, said she voted for both Trump and Lawler but isn't sure how she'll vote this fall as her profit margins shrink.

“To be the superpower and make sure everybody else is good, of course I believe in that – but if I can’t pay my bills, that’s crazy,” she said. “I know so many people now that are living paycheck to paycheck who are making twice, three times the amount of money that our parents made.”

Republican strategist Alex Conant noted gas prices represent "the most visible sign of inflation in the economy," with a direct correlation to presidential approval ratings. Trump's overall approval stands around 38 percent, while his economic approval rating hit 31 percent in late March.

An Ipsos poll conducted in late March found 60 percent of Americans disapprove of military strikes on Iran, with 56 percent believing the war will negatively impact their finances.

Lawler supports the conflict, arguing it prevents Iranian nuclear development, while contending prices will decline as the conflict resolves. Democrats challenging Lawler have argued he should oppose the war and highlighted Republican tax bill provisions cutting Medicaid and food stamps.

Energy analyst Pavel Molchanov estimates gas prices could return to prewar levels within two months under a "best-case scenario" involving successful peace talks.
