The collaborative arrangement between Apple and OpenAI appears to be collapsing. According to Bloomberg reporting, OpenAI has retained external legal representation to assess potential courses of action, potentially including formal breach-of-contract notification to Apple.
Apple’s stock price fell by as much as 1.2% to reach $295.38 on Thursday following the revelation. Prior to this decline, shares had appreciated approximately 10% year-to-date through Wednesday’s market close.

The collaboration, unveiled during Apple’s WWDC conference in June 2024, integrated ChatGPT capabilities into Siri and the iPhone’s Visual Intelligence functionality. The arrangement also established a direct pathway for iPhone owners to subscribe to ChatGPT premium services via iOS settings, with Apple receiving a revenue share.
OpenAI projected the partnership could ultimately yield billions in annual subscription revenue. Those projections have not materialized.
OpenAI’s internal analytics revealed that iPhone users overwhelmingly prefer the dedicated ChatGPT application over the Siri integration. The integrated experience only activates ChatGPT when users explicitly voice or type “ChatGPT,” and responses display in a constrained, abbreviated format.
Both Apple and OpenAI have declined to provide official statements.
Growing Discord Between Partners
The alliance has deteriorated from both perspectives. Apple has maintained persistent reservations regarding OpenAI’s handling of user privacy matters. Additionally, Apple leadership has grown increasingly concerned about OpenAI’s aggressive recruitment of hardware engineers from Apple’s teams, offering compensation packages worth millions above Apple’s standard rates.
OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s hardware company for approximately $6.5 billion positioned the AI firm as a potential direct hardware competitor to Apple’s iPhone business.
Apple also resolved a $250 million class action case this month concerning allegations of misleading advertising regarding Siri’s artificial intelligence capabilities. Several features promoted to consumers throughout 2024 remain unreleased.
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI’s efforts to renegotiate partnership terms have reached an impasse. Any formal legal proceedings are expected to wait until OpenAI’s current litigation with Elon Musk reaches conclusion.
Future Direction of the Partnership
Apple intends to expand its ecosystem to accommodate multiple AI providers through iOS 27, anticipated to debut at WWDC on June 8. The new framework, designated Extensions, will enable users to select from various AI models directly through Siri, encompassing Anthropic’s Claude and Google Gemini.
OpenAI will remain available within this model selection interface, which may paradoxically enhance its prominence on Apple hardware compared to the existing implementation.
Apple currently compensates Google approximately $1 billion per year for Gemini technology licensing to support its comprehensive AI initiatives. OpenAI received a comparable offer but rejected it, having grown disillusioned with the partnership trajectory.
Apple finalized its Gemini agreement with Google late last year. In February remarks, CEO Tim Cook explained the company selected Google because leadership determined the technology provided “the most capable foundation” for its artificial intelligence roadmap.
