I’ll continue posting my weekend guide on Friday afternoons, but I figured it never hurts to have more suggestions.

What To Watch Tuesday, October 7

Netflix

Nurse Jackie

All seven seasons of Showtime’s hit dark dramedy Nurse Jackie dropped on Netflix today. Sopranos star, Edie Falco, plays ER nurse Jackie Peyton as she navigates family, work and drug addiction. Falco won an Emmy for her roll, making her the first actress to win an Emmy in the drama and comedy categories.

True Haunting

This new series from director James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) explores paranormal encounters via a combination of interviews and dramatic reenactments.

Hulu

The Surfer

Nicolas Cage stars in this divisive psychological thriller about a man who returns to his childhood beach to surf with his son—only to find a group of anti-surfing locals with a “don’t live here, don’t surf here” policy. Things go badly from here, as beef between the surfer and the NIMBYs gets wildly out of control. Critics liked this one a lot more than audiences with an 84% critic score and a 46% audience score (or Popcornmeter, because apparently now popcorn decides if a movie is worth watching).

Prime Video

Deadloch

Deadloch

No, it’s not new, but we’re supposed to be getting Season 2 of Deadloch later this year, so you might as well watch Season 1 beforehand! This is one of the best mystery shows I’ve seen in years, with great characters and a really excellent mystery. The show follows two detectives with wildly different personalities as they investigate murders in a small town in Tasmania. It’s quite funny also.

HBO Max

Freaky Tales

Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn and Jay Ellis star in this wild action-comedy-heist movie set in 1987 Oakland which, according to the movie’s tagline, was “freaky as hell.” If you’re looking for something fun and off-kilter, look no further.

Paramount+

Tim Blake Nelson stars in this sparse, intimate Western about a farmer and his son who find themselves thrust into the middle of a bloody conflict. The thing is, Old Henry isn’t exactly who he appears to be. Even his son doesn’t know the truth about his father’s secret past. I just watched this the other day and it was brilliant.

Apple TV+

Slow Horses Season 5, Episode 3

Slow Horses Season 5

Credit: Apple

The third episode of Slow Horses Season 5 officially drops on October 8, but Apple releases these at 9pm ET / 6pm PT the day before the official release. So this will actually be available tonight. If you enjoy smart, funny, intense spy thrillers, nothing beats Slow Horses. Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb is the hero we deserve.

BritBox

Blue Lights

Blue Lights is one of my favorite police dramas. The first two seasons are available on BritBox and the third season just started airing on the BBC. It comes to BritBox in November, so get caught up now. It’s an incredibly gripping series with wonderful characters, and follows the stories of regular police officers in Belfast. I’ll be reviewing Season 3 when it comes to the US.

MUBI

Hollywood 90028

MUBI is a cool streaming service because it brings you a lot of obscure and lesser known films that you can’t find anywhere else. That’s especially true of Hollywood 90028, which was released in theaters in 1976, but never on TV or VHS or DVD. It was restored in 2023 and released at boutique theaters and smaller chains like Alamo Drafthouse. The 4K restoration just came to MUBI. If you watch it, you’ll be one of very few people who ever have. The film was directed by Christina Hornisher (her one credited film) and follows a porn cameraman as he prowls the streets of LA at night, leading him to some very dark places.

Let me know what shows or movies you’ve been watching lately, and anything you’d like to see included in these guides, by hitting me up on on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. I hope this guide is useful in your quest to find the very best things to watch on the myriad streaming services we all subscribe to these days. Stay tuned to this blog (and subscribe) for more!
